Thanks to NetGalley and Saga Press for the e-copy of the book which I voluntarily reviewed. This same review will be posted on both Goodreads and Amazon.
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Bellet after following her on twitter for a while, and I will be back for more. It's a toss-up whether I'll grab the later books individually or wait for the next omnibus volume, but I think Jade Crow and her band will stay in my head for quite a while.
I wouldn't call this series YA or strictly for mature audiences. There is a definite journey of self-discovery going on in the protagonist, but she's not doing it as an adolescent. I've read darker YA and lighter mature material, so I can't make any recommendations about when I'd give this series to a teen reader.
The new ratings page seems a bit silly, making me choose one word to describe the mood of four books. I picked dark, but suspenseful and hopeful are fairly close. Thoughtful would come next. I wouldn't really go for light-hearted or nostalgic except in small moments. Easily the biggest character twist comes in the fourth book, but there are plenty of twists and turns to be had. Veteran role-playing gamers will likely feel a bit of the old D&D magic in many ways. We're all characters, and the author is the game master, stringing us along.
