Some days, all you need is a message from a stranger.
Ruby Santos knew exactly what she was getting herself into when she signed up to write a soldier overseas. The guidelines were simple: one letter or email a week for the length of his or her deployment. Care packages were optional.
Been there, done that. She thought she knew what to expect.
What she didn't count on was falling in love with the guy.

This novel is all about Ruby and Aaron... Ruby is in her early twenties and part of the Santos family, that I met and fell in love with while reading "From Lukov with love" a while ago... which is actually the reverse order, because this book was published first :) I mean, all of Mariana's stories can be read as standalones, but you can find smaller or biger connections between several of them :) like I mentioned, I knew all about these guys, and more importantly I already adored Ruby and Aaron, since I met them as an already married couple with a few kids :) so I was curious to see how they got together... that's the main reason why I picked this book soon after yet another re-read of that other story... ;) Ruby "meets" Aaron through the "Help A Soldier" foundation, which pairs up soldiers stationed abroad with people in the States to exchange letters / e-mails and such... so a bit more than half of the book is in that format... most of it in the first half... so be prepared for that, cause I know not all of you might enjoy this format... I didn't mind it at all, especially since I was listening to the audiobook, and Aaron's messages were narrated by the amazing Teddy Hamilton *swoons* ;) don't get me wrong, Callie Dalton as Ruby was wonderful as well, but there's just something in Teddy's voice... :) ok, back to the story :) those exchanges last for almost a year before Aaron comes back home and they actually have a chance to meet... the rest of the book takes place over a surprisingly short amount of time, so I don't want to say too much about it, because of spoilers, so how about we just jump into my thoughts and feelings :)
Like I mentioned before, I have a lot of feelings about this story... some things I really loved, but there were also quite a few that irritated me... I will try my best to share with you some of both, so you can form your own opinion if this is a story you want to give a try :) since there were a few 5 stars worthy moments, but also quite a few 3 stars as well... and lots of in between, I originally landed on 4 stars as my rating for this book, but then after writing and editing this review I decided to change it to 3,5... apparently I have more resentment toward it than I thought... ok, where to start... I am a huge fan of slow burn romances... I will read other stories as well, and in lots of cases really love them, but if I had to choose my favourite type, it would be stories that unfold over a long time, usually starting with a friendship that grows into someting more... that's one of the reasns why I absolutely loved all of Mariana's stories I read so far, she truly is Queen of Slow Burn romances :) but this one... just... it didn't work for me the way I expected or hoped it would... as oppose to a lot of opinions I heard about this story, I actually loved the first half or so, when Ruby and Aaron exchanged e-mails and messages between each other... how you could slowly see the change of tone in them, as they shared more personal thougts and feelings... even though I do agree it's a very hard way to portray growing emotions and feelings between a couple... then, after almost a year of said exchanges they meet... I don't want to get into too many details so as not to spoil you everything that happens, but the rest of the story unfolds mostly during a week long trip... which was a bit too quickly for me... when I was talking about it with my sister, and I told her how I feel about it, she pointed out that it's not like they didn't know each other really weel, so it's not like they went from nothing to everything over the span of a week... and I was like... yeah, you have a point, but it's hard to explain if you haven't read the book... but I will try nonetheless right now :) the change of pace was sudden and pulled me out of the story a bit... to see them interact online and take things slow, and then suddenly things were happening a lot faster... especially if you take into consideration both of their personalities... I mean... both Ruby and Aaron have issues that weren't exactly addressed within the pages of the story... I feel like I'm missing a few more chapters at least, to show us how exactly did they manage to be in a relationship, taking into account the distance and other factors... but let's put that aside for a moment and talk about them as individuals... as in other Mariana's books, I missed a bit the hero's perspective... especially during the second part of the book... because Aaron doesn't talk a lot... so as much as I got to know him through his messages, when they met face to face he was talking a lot less... and I never really knew what was going on inside his head... and I would love to be able to see that, especially since he's a soldier coming back home after another tour abroad... so I don't have a lot to say about him... now when it comes to Ruby... boy oh boy, do I have some opinions about her... *sighs* where to begin? :) on the one hand there are a lot of things about her that I can really relate to... being shy and insecure, doubting other people's intentions... all of that sounds really familiar... but it's also a while since I felt like that, so I can understand why some people might find her whiny and irritating... from the perspective of a person who dealt with some of the things she's still struggling with, I get it... I really do... and I did understood a lot of her behaviour... but she also got on my nerves from time to time... I feel the need to mention that this story included one of my pet peeves when it comes to books, as in: unprotected sex scene where characters don't really talk about protection before doing it, or after... and that was like a hit in the head for me, cause I did not expected it... I mean... no mention about it, even after... no explanation... nothing... I know it might be a small detail for some of you, but like I mentioned, it's an issue for me... I mean, come on, you guys are both adults and should know better... and another thing, when it comes to both main characters, although more for Aaron than Ruby, some things about their pasts were barely mentioned, not really explained better, even though they had a huge impact on both of them as people... how they act now and what sort of people they are... and I needed more... more background, more explanation... just... more... ending felt a bit rushed and just not really like an end to be honest... I feel like I missed a chapter or two between the last one and the epilogue... *sighs* because I loved her other stories, all of that made me disappointed about this book... even seeing Jasmine, Ruby's younger sister and the heroine of "From Lukov with love" didn't help... from what I could see, for some people this is their favourite Mariana's book... others didn't finish it... and I can understand both sides... all I can do is share my thoughts and feelings about it, and encourage you to maybe check a few other reviews if you want, but definitely make up you own mind if you want to pick it up :) if you do and absolutely love it, then I'm happy for you :) we have our own personal preferences for a reason, and stories that irritate me might be your favourites, because of tropes and characters that we have very different feelings about, and that's all right :) you do you and I will do me ;) happy reading either way ;)
Basically why write a review after this kind of summary? hehe but I will because you need to understand how prefect this book was!
Ruby Santos registered to a program in which you exchange messages (regular mail / email) with a soldier while deployed. Her bigger brother was a soldier and through him she learned how meaningful it can be for a soldier so far away to have a connection with the outside world. Her start with Aaron Tanner Hall was a bit rocky.. She was even contemplating switching to someone else.. But Aaron decides to give messaging Ruby another chance and there they start to exchange emails and later on Skype conversations about once a week.
For about 40% of the book this is what we get. The exchange with one another was so on point. It gave such a genuine feel to the way the relationship and friendship progressed. It was just us reading letter after letter, getting to know both characters in such a unique way. The letters weren't long which made the reading fast paced and in no way tedious. I loved that. I was enjoying the banter, enjoying seeing (mostly) Ruby going through changes in her life, realizing little by little how to handle her life and work situation.
After 9 months of them messaging back and forth Aaron finally gets home for leave. From this point, like with all of Mariana's books, we only get Ruby's POV. It's their chance to meet you'd guess right but it doesn't happen right away which I also found so realistic. Ruby feels more than awkward and afraid o meet this guy she hasn't even seen in a photo, but after a long debate she decides to take a chance and meet Aaron, the man she has fallen HARD in love with.
Ruby and Aaron's time together face to face was such a wonderful read. The supper reserved shy person in real live vs. the sassy funny girl Aaron got to see in written word are the same but Ruby needs her time to open up to this gorgeous gorgeous guy she can't take her eyes off. From a stupid slip Aaron made she thinks her crush is one sided and so she battles herself with her emotions for him. Ruby grows a lot in this book, but she also makes Aaron realize he can't ask for openness and honesty when he can't deliver it himself. She doesn't give him a break because she knows she wants more from him, for them even if they stay "just friends".
She might be reserved and afraid of many things but she always put herself out there in the end. She was willing to take chances and with sweet tender Aaron by her side she was able to make those baby steps. Calling a hardened soldier sweet and tender sounds like a sort of paradox, but for Ruby that's what Aaron was. He already realized that she was IT for him, even without us "being in his head" his actions throughout the book were speaking very loudly for anyone willing to listen. He was also patient beyond words. He knew his "end game" was getting Ruby and he was making each gesture at the right time, never asking her more than she was truly willing to give. For me, he was THE perfect guy. Loving and considerate but also confident and strong.
We got a strange little epilogue. I'll admit to being a bit confused about it, but the most important this was Ruby and Aaron are still Ruron Forever!
HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as all of Marian's books are.

Can I also add that not only have I read this book, I listened to it on audiobook ( Callie Dalton and Teddy Hamilton are the BEST narrators ) I’ve done the same for a few of her books and Callie Dalton never fails.
Okay so this is a slow burn, totally filled with banter, cute moments, almost all of the book is letters or emails between them and I totally loveeee that!
Our two leads are Aaron (obviously) and Ruby, they just get each other, perfectly made for each other and no matter how far part they are the chemistry can be felt!
Aaron is in the army, has been for 11 years he didn’t know what he wanted to do with his life he just knew he wanted to be more than the family business. He is down right handsome, so funny, filled with banter and wit. Protective and cute, I couldn’t get enough of him. He doesn’t realise how much he needs Ruby’s letters until they start coming. She makes him smile and laugh more than he ever has. He’s just gotten out of a bad relationship so at first he is unsure if he wants the connection but Ruby can not be denied, she doesn’t quit.
Can he trust enough to open up his heart again?
He thinks he’s done with relationships but will Ruby totally blow that thought away?
Ruby is totally adorable and awkward in the best way! I love her personality so much and to add to that she is beautiful even if she doesn’t believe it (when she thinks her mum and sister are the stunners of the family) she’s ‘Just Ruby’. She is matched with Aaron in the program that sends letters or emails to soldiers over seas. She continues to write even when he isn’t replying, determined not to give up and give him some light from home.
She has had her heart broken by the person she’s been in love with her whole life, everyone knows she loves him but no one knows what happened between them. The classic big brothers best friend..
Her heart was not ready for Aaron.. she is determined not to make the same mistake again, falling in love with someone who can’t love her back.
I swooned, I laughed and I loved!

I’m a big fan of emails/messages in books and the first like 45% of this book is purely emails and IMs so it makes it SO easy to get into!
I have a very love/hate relationship with MZ and I think it’s because her books are so character focused so if you don’t like the characters that much, you’re not going to like the book. When I’m not sold on the characters, I notice all the things that annoy me so much: the repetition, the constant use of identifying descriptions instead of names, the endless poop references etc
I had the complete opposite experience with this because right off the bat, I fell in love with Ruby. She is by far my favourite MZ female and I related to her so much, like I was crying from the first page because of the way she spoke and viewed herself.
I’m also madly in love with Aaron, and he’s blond… MZ does grumpy men so well and it was nice to to see the opposite of that because I love a non-grump so much. Aaron is just perfect. I can’t believe Aiden Graves is now down to three on my list and Aaron and Rhodes are both fighting for that top spot (I’ll probs have a different fave depending on my mood 🤣)
Watching Ruby and Aaron’s relationship grow from him not replying to the long emails to the messages to the phone call to them meeting, I just, god it was so good. I didn’t even mind the constant poop discussions in this book because it just showed how comfortable they grew with each other.

I've seen many people say that the first half bored them because it was just emails and IM's but that was actually my favourite part. I felt super connected to the relationship and MZ still managed to make it exciting.
However the last 50% was just kind of baffling. The problems or tensions between them felt like they were created out of thin air and didn’t make a whole lot of sense. The miscommunication was infuriating and the MMC clearly had some sort of depression after his deployment and it was just never mentioned or dealt with. Also the epilogue was super weird and not the resolution I wanted.
Lukov is my favourite book of all time, and Ruby is the sister of the MC in FLWL, so I was SO excited to read this one.
What MZ does do immaculately is she wrote Ruby and Jasmine’s narrator voices in such a similar style, I could tell they were related. It was surreal. That’s talent!! They’re totally different girls but you could distinctly tell they are sisters.
This should’ve been 150 pages shorter imo but overall was a pretty okay experience.

Ruby is writing letters to an unknown soldier. It is part of a program which encourages civilians to connect with soldiers and help them through the time they are abroad.
Ruby didn't expect this time to be any different. But with each letter and email, she gets to know Aaron better while also sharing parts of herself.
The romance is a slow burn which makes sense giving the distance. This book has so much built up, the tension was so intense at points.
Letter exchange is always very interesting to see. I liked the way they got to know each other and how much they shared from the beginning.
Even though it is a 500 pages book I read very fairly quickly because a big part of the book is in letters and dialogues format, which I enjoyed very much.

A large part of the book takes the format of emails back and forth between the protagonists Ruby and Aaron. Aaron is in the army and Ruby is a volunteer in a program that ‘adopts’ a soldier when they are deployed. They promise to email and write letters and send the occasional care package. I think this appealed to me initially because in my teens I used to write to an airman who was stationed in the Falklands that I met through a mutual friend. I remember that we used to talk about everything and anything and this is what this book started out like.
Ruby’s brother was a marine who was injured whilst deployed and his stories of his time overseas made her want to give support to someone that didn’t have a family like hers. She’d had several other soldiers before Aaron that she’d written to, but none that she connected with so well. Gradually over the course of the book we see them both starting to open up to each other, starting with silly jokes and asking about ‘favourites’. The emails start to get more personal as time goes on and we gradually get to know the characters at the same time as they get to know each other.
Eventually the format changes to sending Skype messages. They become very close friends and admit to sharing things with each other that they’ve never shared with anyone else. It’s a slow intimate journey as the relationship transforms into something deep and beautiful, especially once the relationship moves out of the virtual into the real world after Aaron comes back to the US.
It’s a lovely book that allows us to see into the heart of two characters. I really enjoyed getting to know Ruby and Aaron. They are both interesting characters with flaws and weaknesses that they slowly reveal after the initial getting to know each other phase. At the same time they are both good people who want to help others, they are funny and supportive of each other as they become friends.
This is a great book, but if you want hot and steamy, this doesn’t have much of that at all. If you like a long slow build, then this is a book you will enjoy.
