For once I guessed at who the killer was which was also quite satisfying but of course there were a number of plausible others right to the end. Very well crafted and the Lincolnshire fens sound intriguing. Enticingly played. I look forward to the next in the series and will try her other ones too.

The Murderer’s Son was a great crime thriller that caught your attention from the beginning and kept it until the somewhat surprising end. A young man is convinced that his mother was a famous, blood-thirsty serial killer and that he too is a serial killer. He surrenders himself to the police claiming to be the murderer of two young women but lacks any memory of how and when he murdered them. His girlfriend is sure he isn’t a murderer and tries to help the young man by proving to him that he isn’t one. That’s when things really begin to take off and things become complicated.

The story was well written with interesting characters, but you don’t really get to know a lot about them. You do eventually get quite a bit of detail about one of the main characters but many of the other significant characters are very shallowly developed. It wasn’t until I finished the book that I saw at the end there was a character description for each main character. That would have been much more useful at the beginning of the story than after reading it. It would certainly have made understanding the characters a lot better, and the story more enjoyable.

Having said that; I do think the book was very good, had interesting characters and a good plot. It certainly had a number of twists to the story including the ending. It was a quick read and one that once you start to read you don’t want to put down.

I've read several of the DI Nikki Galena books and they're excellent. This is just as good with the person 'whodunnit' a complete surprise. This one has a new partnership, Jackman and Evans. A new straight from Uni type male DI and an older female DS. She's a motor bike riding widow, and he's scared of their computer whizz woman who works in the basement.
A plot different to most I've read, but it kept me reading until the wee small hours. There were a few additional twists that although seemingly didn't really mean much, actually contributed to the plot more than realised.
Joy Ellis obviously knows police work inside out and the area in and around the Fens very well. This goes to make excellent stories and well worth reading.

This is the 1st book in the DI Jackman and DS Evans series by author Joy Ellis.
'The Murderer’s Son' is my first read of a Joy Ellis book and was a fairly decent read. Not a classic but enough promise to give her writing another read. A police procedural crime novel where a brutal serial killer is on the loose in Fensland, England. The book starts with a flashback when twenty years ago a local farmer and his wife were brutally stabbed to death. French woman Francois Thayer was convicted of the murders and subsequently died. Now in present day Allison Fleet is found murdered in her own kitchen, brutally stabbed. Following the death Daniel Kinder walks into police station and confesses to the murder.
I enjoyed the main two characters and expect them to get better in coming books when further information is shared. A decent start to the series and a fair read.
