Felix is a vampire - a fierce creature of the night who strikes terror into the hearts of everyone unlucky enough to become his prey. Or at least, that’s what he thought was true, until he met John. John is completely unimpressed with Felix, much to his dismay. Felix becomes fixated on proving his ferocity to John - and when that doesn’t work, he strives to make any impression on him at all.
John is a witch, and as all witches know, vampires are notoriously stupid creatures who only have the power to hurt those who fear them. Besides, he’s under a curse much more frightening than any vampire. Felix’s desperate attempts to impress him annoy John at first, but gradually, they become sort of endearing. Because of his curse, John has pushed everyone in his life away. But Felix can’t be hurt, so there’s no harm in letting him hang around.
Felix is technically dead. John has nothing left to live for. But together, they might have a shot at life.
This dark and witty vampire romance for adults is complete at 100,000 words, with no cliffhanger. Despite some dark twists and turns, it ends with a solid HEA.

A very unusual take in how vampires came into existence, from a curse. The way it was described is hilarious!
The characters, starting with a rather clueless Felix, jaded John, Cat, Lo and let's not forget Astray (the cat), were great. I loved the plot - John is a witch, barely living, and under a curse. He meets Felix, vampire, not to bright who is determined to frighten John. It's part hilarious, touching, scary, sweet, hot and sad as they begin to fall for each other and try to break the curse and another witch's hold.
Be sure to read the bonus short - Astray Saves the Day, it's brilliant!
Michael T Bradley was excellent! He captured Felix's vapidness, John's laconic demenour perfectly. He had perfect timing for John and Lo's sarcasm, and a great voice for Richard's Menace.
Highly recommend!!!!
The author did a nice job with worldbuilding, fitting exposition comfortably into the narration and conversations. And I liked the world she built. The witches she gave us had an understated, modern feel to them, not anything like the hags of folklore or the students of Hogwarts. The vampires also deviated slightly from the literary norm, in that in the world of Curses, Foiled Again, there were three distinct sorts of vampires, all formed by a unique type of curse. It was nice to see a book were there wasn’t any kind of ‘but not like those vampires’ malarkey.
Despite living in a world where vampires were divided into three distinct categories (the revenants, the heartless, the tormented), Felix managed to defy those labels. As the result of a spell gone somewhat awry, Felix grows throughout the story to become more than the average, heartless bloodsucker. He has to learn how to handle sparks of emotion that have been dead to him for centuries.
John also has to learn to live with the emotions he’s long suppressed, hoping to stave off a painful farewell to the world. He’s sensitive and kind underneath a gruff exterior and, despite some initial enmity, Felix pulls out a softer side in John.
Reading about the two of them together tugged at my heartstrings, which always sucks me in to a story, no matter what other flaws there might be. A few times throughout, I got the feeling that some of the events of the story were just padding to make the HEA we want for the main characters that much harder to reach. There are some objectionable characters (deeply closeted homophobe, etc.) that felt a little flat and the main conflict is easily solved long before the actual end of the story, giving rise to one of my least favorite things: the double ending. Given how much I enjoyed the overall story, I didn’t mind as much as I would have in a tale that was less well crafted. I sped through this book and promptly bought another book by the same author.
Curses, Foiled Again moves at a nice speed and features an array of other queer characters outside of it’s gay, cis male protagonists. It’s a sweet story with a darker bent that will give you the warm-fuzzies.
We first meet Felix when he tries to drink from John and fails completely because John has no fear of him.
“What are you doing?” John looks more annoyed than unnerved.
Felix felt somewhat deflated, but he soldiered on. “I am stalking you.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m a fierce creature of the night.”
“So you think you can annoy me into being frightened of you? Is that your plan?”
Felix didn’t say anything; when he heard John say it out loud like that, it sounded stupid.
Their ongoing interaction had me laughing out loud at the silliness at times. Such as when Felix grasps sarcasm for the first time. Did I mention that vampires aren’t the brightest of creatures in this universe?
“So what’s your curse?”
“Ask your witch.”
I did. He said he wasn’t sure.”
John didn’t reply, continuing his grim march onward.
“Is it something really bad?”
“No. It’s a nice curse.”
That seemed to puzzle Felix for a moment. “Ah. You’re being sarcastic.”
“No sh*t.”
“So what is it, then?”
John gritted his teeth. “I am forever plagued with annoying vampires.”
“You’re being sarcastic again.”
And their dates. After relentlessly nagging John, Felix manages to score a date. Ever the romantic, John chooses a museum with tar pits for their second date because nothing says romance like the remains of dead animals trapped in tar.
Their dialogue had me laughing out loud (again) but I appreciate sarcasm and dark humor. It may not be for everyone:
“You know, there actually aren’t any dinosaurs here,” John said. “They existed millions of years before all these mammals. But they bill themselves as a fossil pit, so people demanded dinosaurs. Why let the truth get in the way?” “That’s very interesting,” Felix lied.
“Everything dies eventually.”
“Not me,” Felix said a little smugly.
“Oh, sure you will. Humanity is doomed. Climate change, nuclear war, maybe even an asteroid. And even if you managed to survive all that, you’d have no one to eat, and you would starve. Slowly.”
Felix’s face fell. He’d never thought of that before.
Please do yourself a favor if you love goofball humor and two boys falling in love and read this book!

John is a witch cursed and knows that he will die violently at someone else's hands. Since the curse is based in love he has cut himself off from other people. But then he meets a vampire, Felix, who becomes interested in him. Vampires exist because of a different curse and they are vain, heartless creatures- but being undead John figures Felix can't get hurt and starts to let him in. What that leads to is something entirely unexpected.
This turned from silly and amusing to a rather beautiful rumination on many tthings. From the responsibility people have to those around them, to the compassion and guilt having a heart brings. It talked about love and the risk and fear it brings. It even had some musings about life and its purpose. It was beautiful and very interesting as each person found different truths for themselves as the book went along. This was a truly wonderful read that I would highly recommend!

The relationship between the MC's was a little odd and a little hard to connect with, but overall I really enjoyed the story.
