My nine year old loves this author so I bought the book. The prior Real Friend was on her 3rd grade reading list, but this book is a bit mature for her even now that she is in 4th grade. Still have it 5 stars because she loves the author and the images and message is good, however subject matter might need to wait a year or two for most kids.

Shannon Hale writes about her life with such vulnerability and LeUyen Pham illustrates it with such vividness.

This is a book where the ending will leave you with such relief and feelings of empowerment.

Bonus - the author’s note at the end was a nice touch with additional information in a straightforward text.

This was a great graphic novel. The middle school years are hard and figuring out how to fit in and keep friends etc...is at the top of all in this age range. Shannon Hale and Leuyen Pham do a great job of sharing the story of Shannon learning to navigate this time of life.

Shannon has found herself in the "cool" group and she isn't sure how she got there and wondering if she will stay. It is hard to keep up with new trends, they seem to change daily, and now many of the girls talk about boys! Apparently you are supposed to talk about boys but not be their friends?! Shannon deals with anxiety about all the changing social rules as well as school itself. As the year progresses she begins to find her own voice and at the beginning of 7th grade she may just be on the path of finding true Best Friends.

Biography

New York Times best selling author Shannon Hale started writing books at age ten and never stopped, eventually earning an MFA in Creative Writing. After nineteen years of writing and many rejections, she published The Goose Girl, the first in her award-winning Books of Bayern series. She has since published 30+ books for young readers including the Newbery Honor winner Princess Academy and its two sequels; multiple award winner Book of a Thousand Days; and graphic novel memoirs Real Friends, Best Friends, and the upcoming Friends Forever (with LeUyen Pham). With frequent collaborator LeUyen Pham, she created the adorable picture book Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn. Her novels for the adult crowd include Austenland (now a major motion picture starring Keri Russell).
