Soon no one on Earth will have a place to hide in this novel about fears known and unknown by #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense Dean Koontz.
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting.
The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.
Katie soon finds herself in an epic and terrifying battle with a mysterious enemy. But Katie’s not alone after all: a brave young girl appears out of the violent squall. As Katie and her companion struggle across a dark and eerie landscape, against them is an omnipresent terror that could bring about the end of the world.

Katie removes herself onto an isolated island to try and recover from a horrible family tragedy. No one else on the island but her and some wildlife.
Across the channel is another island that has some terrible secrets that are about to be accidentally unleashed to change her world and maybe all the world forever.
No spoilers and the first half of the book is amazing! Scary and non-stop action. Then the awkward filling comes in, unnecessary dialogue and no action. What started out strong ends in a whimper.
Don’t rule this book as a whole, 4 stars and I’ll pick up another Koontz book soon again.
But this book ... It drew me in. It made me enter the protagonist's psyche and explore each and every event and how it had led her to this place at The End Of The World (Not a home mind you, but a house).
I found myself trying to imagine how I'd react in her shoes... And every knee jerk reaction or idea the author systematically offered, considered, and debunked in it's time.
I'll be replaying scenes from this book in my head for a while I suspect. I feel like there's more here than words.
I just think naming a character Michael J Fox and the reason says so much about the kind of human DK is I believe! He finds ways to include animal characters so they are loved, usually integral, and never cheesy! Many times saving the day!
Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a book about animals. It’s a horror novel as only DK can write! I just wanted to acknowledge what I believe is just a good human writing superb horror!
The older Koontz became and the older I became, I realized what a truly profound writer Koontz was. He wasn't merely writing books for entertainment, he was writing books that were meant to educate.
In the early 2000 I automatically began to flip to the back of Koontz's book. In the back of certain books he would have the history of the book. Telling that the book was in fact based on true events. Such as his very scary book Tick Tock.
Koontz went on to write like this for many years, he was "BRILLIANT" especially if you are a true fan of the way this mans mind works.
Then he went to writing about his dogs and unfortunately, I lost track of where I left off.
My last book I read The Other Emily and The House at the End of the World, are true heart pounding, can't wait to see what happens next, true Dean Koontz books.
I was very happy to have picked up an old friends books again.
Kudos to Koontz as usual, he really can write no wrong..
Intriguing as always, edge of your seat suspenseful!

This really is a book that grabs you and doesn't let go.
Some things to know: At the start of the book there is not much dialogue at all but it gets better once you get about a quarter of the way through. The first half of the book can feel quite claustrophobic. Great prose in places - I cannot help but quote something that you will read in the chapter "What Walks The Night" that seems very appropriate for our modern world: "... for these days, the world is ruled by arrogant narcissists who have exchanged their souls for the promise of power, and in spite of all their talk about justice and the betterment of 'the people,' they care naught for any but themselves."
Summary - an excellent book, thoroughly recommended.

Features Katie who has retreated to a life of solitude after a significant unexpected loss to a remote island, called Jacob's Ladder.
But finds this tranquillity ruined by the nearby presence of a government installation on Ring Rock Island.
The story centres on the back story of what took Katie to her Island, the growing menace of Ring Rock Island and her response to the agents of the secretive ISA agency.
The menace cannot be described without spoilers, sorry.
Well written and very descriptive with the author conveying the Katie back story well as well as the characteristics of the Island.
Fans will enjoy as it contains many continuing favourite themes of the author.
First time readers equally will enjoy and should also seek out the older classics such as Watchers, Demon Seed, Phantoms etc. as well as the Odd Thomas series.
