I was happy to buy this book by Mary Jo Putney written in 1988 - she never disappoints, It is an adventure story following Marie-Christine (Christa to her family), Comtessse d"Estelle, fleeing from the reign of terror in France, with her half-brother, Charles, Earl of Radcliffe, and her mother, Marie-Claire. Arriving in England alone, broken-hearted by the loss of her beloved family, Christa stays in her brother's home, now occupied by his uncle, the new Earl. After her year of mourning, Christa is surprised and upset when Lewis, now the earl, informs her she is penniless and offers her marriage. Christa is shocked to learn she not only lost her family, but is poor. It is unthinkable to marry Lewis so she plans to run away to London to find work. Her beauty, courage and pride drive Christa to stand on her own and survive. Her first position as a lady's maid did not last after she had to fend off the advances of the husband. Christa lands literally in the arms of Captain Lord Alexander Kingsley, Viscount Kingsley, hero of the Royal Navy, who happens to be looking for a maid for his younger sister, Annabelle. The two young women become friends and Christa becomes part of the family who are scarred by the hurtful actions of their recently deceased selfish mother. Alex is drawn to Christa for her beauty, intelligence and kind heart. And Christa can't help being drawn to the handsome officer. But the social divide can't be crossed - so Alex thinks - and Christa refuses to reveal her secret. This is not my usual genre, though I do enjoy historical fiction. I flat-out refuse to read any book that has Duke, Spare, or Rogue in the title. Facing a number of long flights, I thought I'd give "Lady of Fortune" a go, thinking that a light romance might take the curse off of being spam-in-a-can. I'm glad I did!

I liked the characters and cheered their adventures and misadventures. Christa's feisty spirit kept the comedy of errors anchored. the story was cleverly and engaging written and I laughed at how the tangled web was resolved.

I will certainly read more books by this author.

Always a terrific and engaging plot and the most wonderful characters to love and a few despicable ones as well. She is a true storyteller. Christa was a French aristocrat during the Great Terror and escaped to England after becoming separated from her family. She spends a year in mourning at her half-brother's estate. The Uncle then causes her to run off to seek employment.

I had a hard time liking the heroine who was an expert on everything. Lady's maid? Sure! She could whip up hairstyles, apply cosmetics, deal with the garments and so on. It's just too over the top. She is literally thrown out of her first assignment straight into the arms of the hero, Alex, who needs someone to help his sister. Lots of contrived conveniences. Most of the other characters are likeable and the basic story was enjoyable.

It always gets my goat when a character (Alex) becomes injured (and our heroine sews him up) manages, whilst in a fevered state, to feel well enough to engage in sex and then is miraculously better. Then comes the misunderstanding. The contrivances in this scene were many. Still, there is a HEA. I would likely read Charles and Annabelle's story.

I bought books by this author because others said how much they liked them. I am always a little hesitant to read historical romances set in Georgian, Regency and Victorian England because so often they are so poorly done. The time periods are muddled, modern slang and phrases are used, historical facts are wrong but none of that happens in this story with perhaps one exception which was very minor, a phrase that sounded too modern for the time. This is definitely a happily ever after book as everyone, even some less likeable characters ended up in a happy place. That was the one thing that I found somewhat off putting because life is rarely that neat. However if you like stories that have enough tension to propel the story but everything works out very well, then I think you too will find the book enjoyable.
