Pilot Episode was one of the best ever in TV comedy series history. Provided insight into the 6 primary characters backgrounds. Foreshadowed character relationships for future seasons.
.
.
Friends is the perfect example of the well known phrase "greater than the sum of its parts". 6 main characters were *not* funny individually. But the *combined ensemble* resulted in a comedy cultural phenomenon.
.
.
Here is my ranking of Friends characters, from best to worst. Sorry, not sorry.
.
Joey - funniest character. literally played multiple characters in the series.
.
Monica - character was lovable despite being a control freak and neat freak. good physical comedy.
.
Rachel - wanted what she could not have. when she got it, no longer wanted it. (Ross, of course). spoiled and selfish character.
.
Ross - very insecure character. worst decision maker with respect to relationships.
.
Chandler - character's shtick was terribly annoying and extremely over used. Actor's personal problems unfortunately had negative effects on the character and show.
.
Phoebe - character was too quirky and not funny. writers literally had to shoehorn this character into scenes in countless episodes.
.
.
Friends somehow lasted 10 seasons. TV comedy series should have ended after season 5.
.
(1) Obvious lack of *diversity* on Friends. TV comedy series took place in New York City! By comparison, 1970s TV comedy series Barney Miller took place in NYC and had a diverse cast.
.
.
(2) Friends peaked in season 5. Writers, Directors, and Producers ran out of good ideas for new episodes.
.
Example 1 : character Janice appeared in all 10 seasons. OMG! Enough is enough.
Example 2 : mega star Bruce Willis portrayed an insecure father who literally cried in season 6.
Example 3 : Monica and Chandler romance was *not* originally planned. Audience reaction and fan feedback helped create "Mon-dler".
.
.
(3) Most supporting characters were written out of the show too quickly.
.
Example : character Elizabeth Stevens was Ross Geller's student and girlfriend in season 6. Cute couple, despite the characters' age difference. Writers should have continued the Elizabeth and Ross story arc into season 7.
