The found family trope is a staple of Seanan McGuire's writing, but it really comes out to play in this book! It was a relief to see Annie lean on others, and the road-trip atmosphere that starts off the book drives home that she's able to rely on the people she's with in a way that she hasn't in previous books.

As for plot: those who want some development in the Price-Covenant war and Annie's role in it will be satisfied, and of course local hijinks abound when Annie and the gang run into an ornery young man and immediately fold him into the group. Past installments in the series have often left me wanting more development of secondary characters, even those that appear in several of the books, but this one gave more depth to Annie's friends in a way that I really liked.
