Obviously, if you have made it this far in the series, you know that Dan Abnett is a serious author of Warhammer. The reason being, in my mind, is that he brings humanity to what is normally a universe devoid of anything but mindless fighting and platitudes about duty. He makes complex battle scenes unerstandable and very real. At the same time, his characters are relatable and human, be they rogue or paragon. In the last several books in the series, Abnett has endeavored to describe a working and 'realistic' version of the Imperial Guard wherein soldiers are expected to live more than a few hours and therefore are able to develop relationships and have character progression. I imagine most people who see this will have read the other 14 books in the series, but if you are a wh40k fan or you enjoy military sci-fi, do yourself a favor and pick up Dan Abnett's work.
