I love sci-fi series so when I noticed the Survivors series 18 books I had to give it a try. Let me preface this review by saying that I am now ready book ten in the series so you know I like it. I have been reading sci-fi almost exclusively for the past 20 years. I have read some great books and some not so great. I really enjoy all the different ways that writers choose to tell their stories. Some spend all their efforts to go deeply into the nuts and bolts of the technology, this author is not one of those. Most of the tech and gadgets are introduced and used but very barely if at all explained. Then you have authors that spend all their time explaining how and why the characters do what they do. This author is not one of those either. Nathan Hystad is somewhere in the middle of both. He gives you some background about the tech but really lets you fill in the gaps. I find that I'm fine with that because he gives me enough to accept the tech and not be too concerned with the mechanics. Not something that always works for me. If you want really hard science fiction this is probably not the series for you but if you are willing to ride along it just might be a fun ride. I think the way he paints his characters is very similar. I know them, I like them and I want to keep reading about them but there are some aspects of them that I find hard to accept. Again all I can say is that when I get to the end I will probably be very sorry to see them leave me. As I said, I am already reading book 10 of 18 and I am going to keep on reading to the end. I think my time is well spent and I think you may feel the same way if you do the same.
