I bought this issue specifically for this story.

"Orfy" is the fourth story in Richard Chwedyk's Saurian series. The first three are "The Measure of All Things," in the January 2001 issue of F&SF, "Bronte's Egg" in the August 2002 issue, and "In Tibor's Cardboard Castle," in the October/November 2004 issue.

The "saurs" are miniature, genetically engineered dinosaurs, originally sold as toys. Children were told that they were toys, not pets, and that they weren't really alive, with the result that they were horribly abused, then abandoned. Many of them have now been rescued and are being cared for in various homes that have been bought specifically for them. These four stories follow the lives, and deaths, of some of the saurs in one such home. They are beautiful, bittersweet stories about the triumph of spirit and love over circumstance, and cautionary tales about what can go wrong when greed and science join hands.

It's best to read these stories in order, but even if you've never read the others you'll enjoy this one. And probably cry over it.
