I think I may have found a new favorite sci-fi writer. This book is #2 in a trilogy and I am about to finish #3. The basic premise of the trilogy is not "earth shaking." How many plots have you read where mankind is about to be annihilated by an alien species? Before you say "here we go again" read the books...in sequence. The hero is something of an anti-hero which is not unusual for the genre but the author does an excellent job of creating great character interactions and development. Yes, there is a certain predictability. After all, if mankind is destroyed, what is the point. But this author puts together a good story line with believable characters and the writing is excellent. I have enjoyed his writing to such an extent that I have already purchased his next novel which has nothing to do with this storyline. If you are looking for a good read by someone who appreciates the importance of solid prose and sound character development, I recommend this author. But start with the first book in the trilogy or you will be lost.
