Having enjoyed the Black Dog series, I was really excited to start this series but this book reads like a rough draft. The main character is unlikeable, the secondary characters are one-dimensional, and the plot is chaotic. Luce behaves like a moody teenager and for a detective, she is just plain dumb. When her best friend goes missing there is absolutely no sense of urgency to find her. Instead, we have to read about the main character going out to breakfast, her dad (also a cop) taking a nap and her being tempted to binge watch a baking show on Netflix. And don’t even get me started on Cole - bleh. The author waste time with irrelevant details and then rushes through the story with poor pacing and a painful lack of research. DNA results taking weeks? Sure, if you don’t ask the lab to rush it. An entire day to obtain security footage? Okay, if you really don’t want to find the victim. A small town having multiple sergeants and detectives? Maybe if their tax base is full of millionaires. Multiple young women disappearing in a small town and everyone is more curious with the markings on Luce’s arms? Not a chance. This book lost me around the halfway point but I finished it hoping it would get better. It didn’t.
