This book was amazing and the most original story I've seen in years. It's part alternate history, part fantasy, part gunslinger, and has a wonderfully strong and realistic female lead. Lisbeth Rose, who tells her own story in the first person, is a "gunnie." In this version of the 1940's, a "gunnie" is a bodyguard who protects groups who are traveling through the dangerous country. She has an arsenal of guns and rifles, and she's very, very good at what she does. Charlaine Harris tells the story in Lisbeth's voice, and we learn a lot about her and her world pretty quickly. I love the magic that is also seamlessly woven into it. I won't spend time here summarizing the story, but will say there's never a dull moment. I love Lisbeth Rose, and I hope this first outing is the beginning of many adventures for her. I'm happy to tell you that this is a whole story, with a real ending where everything is wrapped up satisfactorily. No cliffhanger here; Charlaine Harris is too good and too much of a professional for that . She respects her readers enough to give us an honest and very real heroine with flaws and skills, and she doesn't need a cliffhanger or any tricks to keep her readers coming back for more. And so I say, "More, please!" Easily all the stars there are!
