A while back, I read the beta-version of this short book, but unfortunately, I couldn’t recall many details. This is a sequel to “One Fell Sweep,” Book #3 of the Innkeeper Chronicles series. To better understand and appreciate this book, it’s best to read the previous book. Authors attempt to summarize Book #3, but the backstories are fragmented and the authors’ time-jumps are choppy and awkward. Plus, the previous book sets up the protagonists’ characters and their dicey relationship issues.

That said, this is best of the Innkeepers Chronicles, probably because it’s not about an Innkeeper but a powerful warrior-woman and mother. I love Maud Demille who is a kickass human, widow of a vampire knight, mercenary fighter, and fierce mother of a half-vampire child named Helen.

This science fantasy has a fast-paced plot with a romance subplot, cunningly devious aliens; political machinations; bone-crushing beat-downs; close-combat battles misted with blood; grisly injuries, and hungry dragons. The authors lovingly develop Maud’s character and also spend time on other MCs and secondary characters. The setting is similar to that of many science fantasies with space-faring vessels, explosions of space ships, fantastical gardens, alien hunting preserves, castles, etc.

From what I’ve read online, this may be the last Innkeeper novel for a while, because the series isn’t selling as well as Andrews’ other series. Shame, because I’d love to read another book with Maud as protagonist—rather than sister Dina.
