The setting in this film is great for a creepy story. And it looks great. But that isn't nearly enough to create a compelling horror film.

The characters are cyphers. They receive no development at all. It's just "young family with several blonde women in it." Even the villain is completely undeveloped and nondescript. The film is quite predictable and does not develop any real mythology about the villain. He just looks spooky and appears to hate the family that moved into the lake house. There aren't even good red herrings here. The only neighbor, who is helpful but vaguely menacing when he first appears, shows up later in the film briefly only to up the body count.

Sure, there are a few tense moments, mainly pumped up on steroids by an overwrought soundtrack. But none of it goes anywhere. By the end, they leave room for a sequel. But burn me once, shame on you; burn me twice, shame on me. I wouldn't watch it, and, if I had a time machine, I'd go back and tell myself to give this one a pass.
