Was an unncessary Lesbian character really necessary in a YA fiction book about the Holocaust? It was definitely too forced. It was just check-marking a box so the author could fit it into a LGBT category. The flipping back and forth between a memory for the young girl and the poorly written poetry of the young boy was disappointing writing from an established author. If you are looking for another Devil's Arithmetic, look further. This is not it.
