This was an interesting and enjoyable book. I was not aware of the ships of brides which took so many women to UK to be with British servicemen they had married during shore leave in WW2. Nor was I aware of the extent that those small island of Indonesia played a role during the war.
The characters were all believable and Jojo Moyes did a great job involving them in their individual and joint storylines. I can imagine how hard it was for the captain to try to contain the crew and be able to keep 600 women entertained on long journey like that on a ship not built for that role. For the women, the initial excitement of heading to new country to be with their husbands suddenly became fear that they may end up unwanted with rumors and gossip spreading like wildfire. For the crew, keeping themselves contained was an obvious struggle.
A well written book combining fact and fiction keeping the reader entertained throughout. It deserves 4.5 stars.
