I am a strong fan of Erdrich’s writing. I find I love some of her books and do not connect with others. Of her more recent books, I love Round House and La Rose, so I was looking forward to a good read in Plague of Doves. I found the concept of the story —- an event in history that sends intimate ripples among many participants and descendants, and using their own voices —- alluring. However, the character development (most developed in an isolated manner) did not draw me in to the protagonists themselves. There were moments I connected, but overall I felt emotionally distant and blasé. Sadly, I am disappointed.
