It only gets better.

There are so many hidden gems in the TWAIN DS even lacking the NOGUI option and control over the Curve Flatten, and Laser Targeting functions.

Plymor makes a "B013IVWJP6 Clear Acrylic Open Book Display Stand" available here on Amazon which holds a book in a clear cradle, which is perfect for keeping it open without using your fingers to keep it open. The only distraction is it "Keystones" the Left and Right page images and the TWAIN DS does not have an automated way of "De-Keystoning" the images so they are rectangular.

But even distorted the Book cradle scanning images are near Perfect, the light glances off and does not glare and the images are clearly legible. Its also rather fast to turn the pages and rely on the Autodetect of a Page turn to snap more images. No more buttons or foot pedals.

KEVJES makes a very wide "B08L6TJPPZ Clear Acrylic Tray with Metal Handles" that can be inverted and placed over a Book that is open-faced and weights down, or presses the pages so they are no longer Curved at all. The K21 can then scan through the clear acrylic bottom and is crystal clear. So this kind of makes up for not having a Curve Flatten function available in the TWAIN DS.

I have the Viisan K21 model. It has a solid hefty weight to it which is quite balanced. Its surface has the feel of a fine DSLR camera with none of the soft touch paint so common on many capture devices. It is a hard plastic not metal, but of high grade. The weight helps a lot with carrying and keeping it still when set up for capture. The extensible swing arm with the LED lights and Ambrella(?) or Sony Sensor platform is solid and stays put.

I already had the DSCam software and TWAIN Data Source driver installed and it quickly detected and set everything up. I already had Irfanview and Scan Papyrus licensed and installed and went straight for the Select and Acquire menus on my Windows 7 x64 computer. Windows has had the Twain DSM pre-installed ever since Windows XP and a new DS source was instantly available to my TWAIN Enabled Application.

I was a little disappointed that Scan Papyrus pulled up the TWAIN DS dialog window for selecting source settings and requires a two step, (Acquire and Export) button press to shuttle images from the TWAIN dialog window back to the the Twain Application.. but it works.

I am hoping the NOGUI TWAIN option is available through some registry setting, since Scan Papyrus has pulled TWAIN images from other data sources with no GUI dialog providing a seamless experience. It seems Scan Papyrus can make the setting changes during the request, without the need to use the GUI dialog.. so I can only guess the TWAIN DS is ignoring or does not provide the NOGUI option. Hopefully support can sort it all out.

But even still, this is the closest to the BEST solution I have seen for a Book Scanning platform.

The TWAIN support is phenomenal as it is.. but like I said.. I would so prefer a nogui option during capture.

I can configure a combination of settings that makes a double-tap of the keyboard expose the TWAIN GUI and snap a picture and instantly export it.. but its just kind of a kludge I'd rather not have to see.

The combination of Scan Papyrus 21.3 out of Amsterdam and the K21 is a near perfect combination for the rest of world outside China. Its sleek, minimalist and does pretty much all of the same things the original native Vissan Desktop software does without any of the distractions of a newer customized software package.

Two things a little disappointing beyound nogui:

1. The LED lights do not come on when using the TWAIN DS, not surprising I guess, but if the TWAIN DS GUI must show up it would be nice to put a checkbox for the LED lighting in that. Or provide a separate system tray application to control the LED lighting. (update: The SONY scattered Dot symbol on top the stand, is a Capacitive "Touchpad" for activating the LED lighting, there is no other obvious way of turning on and off the LED lighting through the Viisan OfficeCam software, convenient though.)

2. The Page flatten feature does not work when using the TWAIN DS, again.. if the GUI must show up it would be nice to put a checkbox for the FLAT option in that. Or provide a separate system tray application to control the FLAT option.

I kind of suspect these are minor issues that could be quickly and easily addressed, if they had an SDK or OCX control for Developers or Users that let them write it for themselves.. but as it is this is still usable.

I do not know how to access the device driver API to activate the LED lighting or the FLAT option (called a "Curve Flatten").. it would be such a minor thing to put together to make it a perfect product. They just need a small systray app to toggle these features outside the scope of the TWAIN protocol.. set and forget.

Scanning even though it is over USB2.0 is very swift.. and the image quality at 21 MP is impressive. There is an AutoFocus button even in the TWAIN DS GUI dialog.

There is a WebCam capture feature built into the TWAIN DS GUI, which allows a simultaneous Preview of the 21 MP scan region and Preview of a USB Webcam attached to same system. Separate Buttons for Webcam (only) TWAIN Capture or 21 MP scan region (only) TWAIN Capture or MERGED Webcam and 21 MP scan region capture can take place.

This is Great if you need a Webcam TWAIN capture system, and an extra benefit (in addition) to the K21 scanner itself.. you can use this with any Webcam to turn that into a standalone TWAIN DS capture source, or an additional Compositing TWAIN DS capture source, separate or combined with the images you capture. I used with an old Logitech C615 Business camera which does not have a TWAIN DS driver from Logitech. But with the Viisan K21 it works!
