In Book 2 of Olaf’s Saga, Eric Schumacher delivers another fascinating and highly entertaining historical novel. Torgil, Olaf, and Turid continue to face additional trials, challenges and perils of the Viking age. The interaction of the three protagonists is engaging. Torgil vacillates between anger and disgust over his near hopeless effort to fulfill his sworn oath to protect Olaf who never fails to precipitate or be the first to volunteer for every risky undertaking. Turid’s increasing effort to turn away from traditional female pursuits to become instead a warrior ready to take her place in a shield wall causes additional turmoil for Torgil. As was the case in Book 2, the action is fast-paced and the characters are both interesting and believable. I particularly enjoy how the author uses sardonic humor to offset the brutal reality of harsh conditions and bloody battlefields the author describes so well. The ability to bring history alive and the capability to put the reader convincingly in a past time and place is the hallmark of a master historical fiction novelist, qualities Eric Schumacher demonstrates in this novel and others he’s written. I look forward to reading more of Olaf’s Saga. Preston Holtry, author of the Arrius Trilogy
