After reading and thoroughly enjoying Peter Cawdron's epic GALACTIC EXPLORATION (which I rated five stars), I figured anything Peter writes would be great. That's how good Galactic Exploration is. But I was disappointed by HELLO WORLD. It isn't a bad story, of course and the premise of first contact via social media is certainly an interesting one. But it just doesn't measure up. Here's why:
The characters seem wooden and not very true to life, the story seems rushed and contrived and the ending, if you can call it that, seems a bit preposterous. This would be a good story for a comic book but it really needs a lot of refinement and expansion to stand on its own as great science fiction. You get the feeling Peter Cawdron wrote this in a couple hours a long while back while sipping coffee at Starbucks. Not that this story is going to keep me from reading his other stuff. I was too impressed by Galactic Exploration to be swayed by one subpar offering.
