While this is a story about a group of survivors that are the descendents of an abandoned mining colony sent from Earth to a remote planet, it reminds me of so many of my life experiences. I was a manager in a large corporation and advanced through several levels before retiring and becoming involved in local politics and my community's homeowners association. The behaviors of this colony's leaders is so typical of many of the managers and leaders I've been associated with. Too often, those in leadership positions believe their subordinates need to be protected and are told only what their superiors believe is good for them to know. We've all heard the expressions like, "The truth will out" and the damage done by half-truths and deceptions is always worse than what the leaders tried to protect their people from. If you've been on either side of these kinds of actions, you will share the frustrations of the main characters. Perhaps the most common excuse we've all heard is, "I was only trying to help". Whenever I read a book and I feel the emotions of the characters so strongly, I believe the author has done an outstanding job.
