I read and love anything by Catherine Ryan Hyde, but this novel had special meaning for me. While I was born in 1943 I had never heard about the Japanese internment during WWII until I went back to college in my 40's and a history instructor suggested I write an essay on it. The research and subject became a passion for me so much so that I traveled to Topaz camp in Utah to experience it's ruins first hand then wrote about it as an epilogue to my essay. The internment was only a small part of a coming of age story of a young boy. One of Hyde's best!
