This was an excellent book for showing what life was like in a little French village, occupied by the Germans in World War I. A group of British soldiers are given protection by residents of the small town and one of them fathers a baby girl. As the book goes on, German occupation becomes more and more oppressive and the safety of the Brits becomes more precarious. The love story here is not much of a love story. The real worth of this book is to illustrate the totally beastly nature of war and the sheer waste of human life. Don't read this for the love story. Read it for the horror.
