I highly recommend this lovely book telling about Mimi Alford's affair with President John Kennedy while she was a 19 year old White House intern in the press office.
The book is well written; it is analytical and it is not sensational or overly racy. A lot of JFK fans, who look at him through rose tinted glasses, simply can not come to terms with the well documented FACT that the John Kennedy was an insatiable lothario in much the same way both Lyndon Johnson and Bill Clinton were.
JFK may have done a fine job of not having the world blow up during the Cuban Missile Crisis, but please, the man, like all of us, had feet of clay and was additionally a reckless and rampant adulterer.
Mimi Alford's account just confirms what the 4 Secret Service agents were telling Sy Hersh in his book the Dark Side of Camelot.
Also, she says that JFK told her "I'd rather my children red than dead." Can you imagine Lyndon Johnson, Allen Dulles, J. Edgar Hoover, the JCS, the CIA or a raft of Cold War hawks around JFK saying that?
I liked the part where Mimi talks about racing rubber duckies in the bathtub with President Kennedy. Pretty cool and I think it gives us good insight into JFK.
Also notable is the Mimi tells us that JFK became visibly unnerved when she mention Lyndon Johnson's name and JFK told her stay away from that man! Lyndon Johnson, despite being a whore monger of the first degree himself, made a point to collect a sexual file on John Kennedy a la J. Edgar Hoover. And I think this is quite signicant.
I believe that Lyndon Johnson was at the epicenter of the JFK assassination and this account is yet more verification of the friction, sub rosa war between JFK and LBJ.
There were some racy parts to this measured, analytical book:
"Dave Powers was sitting poolside while the President and I swam lazy circles around each other, splashing playfully. Dave had removed his jacket and loosened his tie in the warm air of the pool, but he was otherwise fully clothed. He was sitting on a towel, with his pants leg rolled up, and his bare feet dangling in the water.
The President swam over and whispered in my ear. "Mr. Powers looks a little tense," he said. "Would you take care of it?"
It was a dare, but I knew exactly what he meant. This was a challenge to give Dave Powers oral sex. I don't think the President thought I'd do it, but I'm ashamed to say that I did. It was a pathetic, sordid, scene, and is very hard for me to think about today. Dave was jolly and obedient as I stood in the shallow end of the pool and performed my duties. The President silently watched."
Also in the words of Karen Matthews:
"On another occasion, she wrote, he asked her to do the same for his brother Teddy. She refused.
Then there was a party with a "fast Hollywood crowd" at Bing Crosby's house in Palm Springs, Calif., that she attended with the president. A guest offered yellow pills that she believed were poppers, or amyl nitrate, a drug often used to enhance sexual pleasure.
Kennedy asked her if she wanted to try one and she said no, but she said he popped the capsule and held it under her nose anyway.
"Within minutes of inhaling the powder, my heart started racing and my hands began to tremble," she writes. "This was a new sensation, and it frightened me. I panicked and ran crying from the room, praying that it would end soon.""
