I love to read Helen Garner, and bought this book in spite of the subject. I thought it may be too gruesome to actually read but i thought I'd give it a go simply and solely because I have loved everything else Helen Garner has written.
I was not disappointed. It is perfectly crafted. I feel as if every word has been carefully thought about before being added to a sentence. And, it is a fascinating read. She doesn't sensationalise the horrific details, it's more of a psychological expose, not only of Farquarson himself but of everyone involved . It's a gripping and fascinating insight into raw human behaviour.
I am left still not knowing what I believe happened on that night. But I do know there are no recipes for behaviour in situations of extreme grief.
