After starting this book because it was offered for free on Kindle, I realized I was on a major journey with this author and her characters, and bought the paperback. Halfway through, I ordered book 2 in the series. I have spent the last couple of weeks in 9th century England, amidst the conflict between the Saxons and the Danes. The author's exhaustive research shows in every page. Unlike many authors who put characters with modern sensibilities into an ancient setting, these characters feel like they really live in the 9th century. The main character, Ceridwen, is Christian and pagan both. She is a bright, educated, and fierce orphan who meets life head-on, and at the age of 17 has lived through more varied and strange events than many do in a lifetime (which in the 9th century was not very long). If you like Britain and what Tolkien called "the matter of the North," you will love this book.
