Maverick is a typical young black male who has grown up in a violent neighborhood called Graden Heights. With his father in jail; Maverick is forced to join the King Lords a gang for protection, Gangs are in his blood. Andre or Dre who is Maverick’s cousin and also a gang member doesn't want his Lil cousin to follow in his footsteps. Maverick has one shining star in his life. His Girlfriend, Lisa. But after he loses his cousin to the streets Maverick’s life is turned upside down. Oh, I forgot to mention that he has been a baby boy named that he’s raising with his mother's help. I’m not going to give away too much if you have read The hate you Give. Then, You know the Carter Family! I love Angie Thomas, I hope this isn't her last book.
