The trilogy of which this is the final book is well written and can be riveting. If you read all three straight through, as I did, you may experience mental fatigue and the occasional credibility suspension. The author obviously loves twisting and turning through the possibilities and potential pitfalls of time travel. I am just not sure that there is a human being alive who can credibly account for all the possible variations. Nonetheless, the characters are clear and well-drawn, the plot moves along steadily, and I enjoyed the trip. (It must have been good, because the story keeps intruding itself into my mind when I am doing other things, including reading seven or eight more books on subjects from fiction to the ever-gruesome history of the Twentieth Century. (Robert Conquest's "Ravaged Century").
