By Earth, the first book of a projected 9 in the Witches of Portland series, introduces us to the Arrow and Crescent Coven by way of Cassiel and Joe. Cassie, a young witch in the coven, can see and speak with ghosts. Joe, a self-employed home remodeler and neighbor of the head of the coven, happens to be haunted.
The story launches from there. Without giving away the plot, By Earth is a fast-paced tale of magic, crime, social justice, and acceptance. The characters feel real, as do the magic and world in which they all exist. (Not surprising, given that T. Thorn Coyle is an experienced practitioner and teacher of magic, and the author of several non-fiction books on the topic.) The story pulled me in, and although the ending was fitting and well done, I wanted it to keep going. Luckily, with 9 books in the series, I have much to look forward to!
