Luckily for fans of speculative fiction, the publishers of Ain't Superstitious have proven their point by presenting thirteen arresting stories from that anthology plus two others in their roster, The Time It Happened and Only Disconnect. Refreshingly original twists on classic tales of the supernatural include a wild night out with a killer cat, a ruinous use of feng shui, a debate between Beelzebub and a butler, a ghastly hall of mirrors and an even ghastlier mime, and a particularly haunting tale of ghostly new-borns set in King Arthur’s time . Sci-fi entries find a cure for cancer, harness human emotion, distort time and dispute indisputable truths manufactured for political manipulation. And because families cling together even as the world flies apart, in deepest space a boy and his grandfather anticipate a celestial whale watch, and a dying man goes on a quest guided by the voices of his ancestors. Anyone who loves finely crafted writing will enjoy each of these quirky, clever and surprisingly moving stories.
