So many issues with this book, but I'll tackle two. 1. The white man who takes off his pants in front of a Black woman. She protests, he still takes them off, and THEY GET MARRIED. Nononononono. Handler (Snicket) has been in trouble for saying racist things before. You would think he'd learn from past experiences. 2. Hurting or laughing at someone to erase your bad mood. That's exactly (not) what we want to teach children. So much for being kind.
As a librarian, I would never read this book in storytime, recommend it for library purchase, or suggest it to a patron. Unless they're looking for examples of how not to write picture books for children.
