I bought the book based on good reviews that animal lovers will enjoy. I happen to be extremely sensitive to the topic of mistreatment of animals and I did find that subject throughout the first 1/3 of the book. SPOILER ALERT There is a military dog who has an extremely unfortunate fate, an abused dog possibly from a fighting ring and there is talk of one character's grandfather euthanizing a dog via "bringing it to the back of the barn..." The dog trainer keeps referring to the dog as "It" instead of "him" and he refers to the dog as a resource and not a pet. Yes I am aware that these things happen and I respect that it is being brought to light. Also, the book probably has a happy ending for the animals in the story. However, being sensitive to the plight of animals, I just didn't enjoy reading about it. I stopped at about 35% of the way through.
