Yes, those are my greasy handprints all over the cover. If a book isn’t marked up, dog-eared, and highlighted, it just means it hasn’t been given any love yet. I loved this book.

This book is about so much more than just drinking and sobriety. It’s about looking inside of yourself, paying attention, and taking responsibility for who you are, sans blame. For me, this book feels like a guiding light into what comes next, after you cease numbing yourself with whatever it is you’re addicted to.

Laura wrote so many things I’ve never been able to verbalize or understand about my own life, my experiences, and my relationships. Her chapter titled “Push Off From Here” was so brilliant, it’s a concept I will apply to any hardship I arrive at. It reminded me of the very last morning I woke up with crippling anxiety and a debilitating hangover, deciding that that story was over and the next season of my life would begin in that moment.

“I could certainly recognize my outright lies and deception, but I hadn’t seen the other ways in which I behaved, communicated, or otherwise represented myself dishonestly in relationships. Things like approval seeking, people-pleasing, not voicing my opinions, and avoiding conflict at any cost - these were all dishonesty masked as something sweeter and more socially acceptable.” This is something I’ve struggled with - especially in romantic relationships. I was always scared of being left behind or being a disappointment, I would unknowingly disregard my own needs to ensure my partner had what they needed and what would make them stay. To be honest, I’ve been single for nearly three years because I’m terrified. Because I’m jaded. Because I’m just beginning to figure myself out.

This book, Laura’s words, showed me that being honest, being a compassionate witness of ourselves, and knowing with each moment we can begin again… those things will set us free.
