First let me say that I wasn't sure if I wanted to read this book, only because I am not a fan of going back in time with a storyline. But this was Blue Moon, so of course it had to be read, and it was PHENOMENAL. Going in to this book you think you pretty much know it all, even knowing the eventual outcome. But you are still given some great background and insight into the town and characters. John and Phoebe have a wonderful romance. We get glimpses of the Pierce brothers growing up and where they received their strength, loyalty, humor and sense of family and friendship. Lucy Score really knows how to draw readers into the story. When the words "He's gone." are said, I started crying (please note I am NOT one to cry). Then when the boys sing "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me" , cue more tears with laughing. This was an outstanding end to our visits with the Blue Moon residents. I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did.
This book is going on my favorites list! I have read each book in the series as they came out and enjoyed them all. Love all the characters in the series and the small quirky home town. But I have to say....This author has outdone herself with this prequel as it is the best of them all! Now we get to see how the parents, John and Phoebe, met and this wonderful family was started. How they raised 3 sons, Carter, Beckett and Jax, and the love they had for each other, their land and the small town of Blue Moon Bend and the people in it. Maybe I fell in love with this book because of knowing all the characters and as I read this story I felt the warm and fuzzy memories of each of the other books. As I was getting close to the end I felt a lump in my throat and my eyes tearing up. I thought this is ridiculous, it is just a book. These people are not real. But what makes this series so good and this prequel is the author makes us feel all the emotions and the warmth of the characters. I think everyone would love to have John and Phoebe for parents. They have a wonderful story and I hope everyone reads it. For me, having read the series already made this book more special. But I would highly recommend it anyway as just a great story to read.
Lucy Score hit this one out of the park. She's never written better IMO, in both storyline and technique. There was nothing in it that was hard to believe, nothing over the top, no character inconsistencies. And it wasn't too long or too short. It was just done perfectly.
John Pierce was such a beloved person in Blue Moon Bend that this prequel had to be handled properly in order to maintain that level of respect while also humanizing him. He's written as sort of a Yoda-like guru with a few flaws. At first he is stoic and repressed, but he is revealed in his actions, essays and goodbye letter to Phoebe to be a wise, honorable, unselfish, tender-hearted, nurturing man. This is probably the most tasteful and reverent romance story that I've ever read. Thank you for that.
My favorite scene was when John had "the talk" with his sons. It was cute but also told us so much about who John was as a father, a partner and a man.
I've reread all of John's essays since finishing this book. It's hard to accept the decision he made in Book 3, but then that's what makes this a story, isn't it. If every character acted logically there would be no story. And there were no black and white answers to his dilemma.
I don't have even one complaint about this book, which for me is unusual. Even some of the complaints and questions that I had from previous books have been addressed, which tells me this book was well thought out and the author was responsive to her readers comments. It was LOL funny, sad, tender—just a beautiful love story about a wonderful man and loving father and the woman who brings out the best in him. I can't say enough good things about this book. It was really moving.
I read this after reading books 1, 2 and 3. I liked books one and two, but three made me so mad that I was going to quit the series. I decided I would just read this little prequel about the mom and dad, and boy am I glad I did! I will probably finish the series now, and will certainly read this prequel again.
I have been an avid reader of romance novels since the 70"s. I have read thousands upon thousand of books, historical and contemporary, and I have to say this series was good. Add on the prequel "where it all Began" and I am going to label it "The series with the best ending I have read to Date"!!!
Each book could be read alone and would make a really good story, but I do highly recommend reading the series in order as a whole and finishing with the prequel (which is bought separately).
Lucy Score has now rated herself among my favorite authors and i will look into and probably be reading all of her books, and impatiently waiting for more.
Although all the books in the series were good, the first book is still my favorite. I loved all the heroes and heroines (except one couple I wasn't really crazy about, hence the 4.8 instead of 5.0), even though i wasn't sure I would at the start. The couple I wasn't really fond of were still needed to bring the story to a whole and it was more in the books after theirs that i kinda lost some respect for them. several of the characters I absolutely fell in love with, and at the very least 2 of these books I will carry with me forever,
I not only HIGHLY recommend this series + prequel i have purchased the series for a friend and can see these books as Christmas presents this year.
What a wonderful book. I’ve been reading the Blue Moon series by Lucy Score and stopped at book four to read the prequel (which you shouldn't read until you at least finish book three). I’m not sure how I can adequately describe how this story touched my heart. So I’ll just say prepare yourself, bring the smiles, the tissues, all your emotions and an open heart. Lucy Score is a master storyteller. How she was able to go back in time and weave this tale and make it so cohesive and seem effortless like it was always there from the beginning makes her kind of a wizard. Her characters are people you wish you could know in real life. This is a book I will definitely be rereading. Thank you Lucy Score for this beautiful story. Somewhere over the rainbow there must be a Blue Moon!
Lucy Score has outdone herself! The beautiful love story of John Pierce and Phoebe Allen is just that. BEAUTIFUL. This story is tasteful and sweet and guaranteed to pull at your heart strings. If anyone can make it through this book without laughing out loud at the wonderfully absurd community of Blue Moon or without shedding tears at the love that shines through the pain of this same community then I pity that hollow person. Lucy has managed to write her way into my emotions yet again and I am in true wonderment of her superb skill! This book should be read after reading the first four Blue Moon books. It flows seamlessly and packs all the feels perfectly.
I am so glad I left this to last to read. Before reading this I didn’t really have an emotional connection to Phoebe but towards the end the tears were flowing. Such a beautiful family...Pierce’s. I highly recommend this Blue Moon Series by Lucy Score! But remember, you will be happier if you read “Where It All Began” at the end. You will feel as if the Pierce’s live next door after you’ve read all the books in the Series! And guess what...another comes out in July ! Keep writing about this place Lucy ❤️
As recommended by Lucy, I waited until after book 4 to read this one. I am soooo glad I did! Not only to avoid the spoilers, but it was absolutely fun seeing the ties and threads from one generation to the next, and because I was so invested in the family, I felt EVERYTHING so much more. Lucy did an amazing job bringing to life a character that was always in the background, but without overshadowing or minimizing the love that followed.
This book contains both one of the moist poignant, mournful scenes ever, and one of the funniest.
Grab your kleenex and hang on tight to this sweet romance. This was my second read of this book, and it just gets better. This a Bluemoon prequel if you will so you'll already know all the characters, there's just a bit younger! This is the emotional tale of Phoebe's first husband and father of the boys, John. You will laugh, and you will cry, either way the tears will fall, so be prepared. But this book perfectly compliments the entire series and it was needed!
I could never get enough of the antics of the Pierces-Merrills and the entire town of Blue Moon. To see that the prequel that started it all was up, I had to go back and reread the first book and on.
This was everything. Made me laugh and it made me sob uncontrollably. John and Phoebe had an epic love story and their kids had something from both of their parents. You know where those boys got it from. If there's more stories for Blue Moon, I can't wait. Thanks for the prequel Lucy. You made it worth the wait
