An excellent read! Brunelle's easy way of writing speaks to the reader as if she is speaking to an old friend. Her use of humor intertwined with bittersweet joy and sadness made me laugh through my tears. Her poignant story of a mother, her love for life and for her family will stay with you long after you have put it down. Having recently lost my own mother, it took some time to get through the book but when I was finished, I felt as if a weight had been lifted. Our family had not been able to talk about our mother or the last few weeks of her life for some time. Our minds were clouded with the pain of her passing and the profound experience of what it was like to be with her in her final days. Shortly after finishing the book, I found myself telling people stories about her life and the meaningful experience of her passing. Recently, our family and her closest friends gathered to celebrate her life and talk about Lorna's book. We laughed, we cried and like Wanda, enjoyed our own mother's favorite Italian delicacies. I am a palliative care physician and have spent countless hours at the bedside of those facing their final days. I have talked with them, their families and though everyone has a different life story, one wish is always the same: that their lives be remembered as being meaningful and that they not be forgotten. Not only does Lorna's book do this beautifully for her own mother, she also shows us how we can do it for ourselves and those dear to us by living each moment as if it were our last. I was so touched by this book that I bought a copy for all of my staff so that they too could experience the story of Wanda, her wonderful daughter, Lorna and loving family. Her story is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, the love of family and the thin veil of hope that separates us from the ones we have lost. Anyone who is facing a serious illness, caring for a loved one who is, or has experienced loss should read this book. It teaches us that life is to be lived; with passion, perseverance and love. It teaches us that miracles do exist if we only open our mind and eyes up to see them. It teaches us to make every moment count and that no matter how long our family may stay with us on this Earth, their love is everlasting.
It is hard to know where to begin in reviewing this book. Lorna Brunelle has a way of pulling the reader into Team Wanda. By the end of the first few chapters, I was already in love Wanda and her incredible family and friends. Like so many others have said in reviews, I found myself laughing and crying sometimes in the same page. Having gone through years of cancer treatment with my daughter, this was a hard book for me to read at times, and I found myself having to put it aside for moments, sometimes days, sometimes weeks until I was emotionally able to resume reading. It is the type of book that makes you think and re-think what you may believe to be true about God, miracles, the power and strength of the human spirit and most of all about the circle of love that surrounds each of us. I was at Cahoun's Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, (which if you read the book has some significance), as I read the final 1/3 of this epic book. At one point, I was truly bawling and as I walked to the water, I looked out to the Cape Cod waters and found myself saying out loud, "Thank you Wanda, you will always be a part of me". What an EPIC gift Lorna Brunelle gave to her mother. Wanda Stairs Howard lives on in the hearts of so many people. I will think of Wanda every time I see a buoy, catch a glimpse of a starfish and clean my butter dish :) One of my favorite reads in a very long time!
This is only the second time I've done a review here on Amazon, I'm by no means a good writer but I’m going to try my best. Let me start by saying I am not a reader. By that, I mean I’m just not one to sit still with a book and get into it like most people, It’s terrible I know. When I bought The Buoy Projects I was hoping because I Loved Wanda with All my heart I would at least get through half of it and she would understand and maybe laugh at me from up above. I read the book in TWO DAYS front to back, I couldn’t put it down!! This book has it ALL and I LOVE IT!! This book made me cry, laugh, snort because I was doing both, made me crave the food she so loved and rethink about life. I could feel her and she made me feel special again. Most of all it had you believing not only in yourself and that you can do anything but in Life again and making you realize how very special it is. This was Wanda. As a beautiful Earth Angel this was all of who she was and all she wanted to share. Her lessons, spit fire attitude, advice, laughter, tears, pain, love of food & the tons of love she had here on earth for ALL is continued through her daughter Lorna in this Amazing book. This is her personality, this is her Team, her hopes and dreams, her strength and unconditional love she had for all living beings (except bugs) it’s her pain and exceptional strength, this is her Life. Lorna captured it all in this book and is sharing every piece of her mom that you can hear & feel. Everybody needs a little Wanda in their life!! I recommend this book to every one!!
I am so IN LOVE with this book, I was lucky enough to be at Lorna's book signing on Sunday night and could hardly wait to get home and bury my nose in this book, I knew it was going to be EPIC and it did not disappoint, I am on the last chapter and like Wanda reading the Outermost House I do not want it to come to an end, I am savoring every word Lorna has written so beautifully, even though I know how it ends. I have laughed and cried in the same chapter, Miss Wanda had an amazing outlook on living and dying, she made the most of the time she had left, and on more then one occasion expressed that people need to "slow down", "enjoy life while they are still here", "savor every moment with family and friends". I think in this life we are all so wrapped up in work, money, etc that we forget what is truly important, how blessed we are to have our own #TEAMWANDA, I for one plan to spend more time with my family and friends and do things to make memories that will last long after I or they are gone, I feel Miss Wanda with me when I am reading this book and I can hear her voice in Lorna's writing.. Thank You Lorna for letting me be part of #TEAMWANDA and for sharing this book and the families journey with the world, anyone that was lucky enough to know her in Life is truly blessed, and I know through this book that the people reading it that don't know her will certainly feel like they have known her their whole life <3
A celebration of a life well lived. Death, our enemy, gets no credit whatsoever. LIfe is eternal and Wanda clearly knew where her true home is. Lorna Brunelle paints a portrait of her Mum which reflects her epic attitude of love, hope and forgiveness. Wanda's faith and courage as well as her open and giving perspective is both admirable and inspiring. A wonderful read for anyone on this imperfect earthly journey. <3 Thank you Lorna for introducing me to your awesome Mum!
I read this book in two days and was sad when it ended. Wanda's love for her daughters is a true example of how a mom should be...she taught them to love and respect everyone equally. Her journey throughout her illness is captured perfectly throughout the book. I admired her strength, humor and desire to make each day count. I only hope that when my time comes, I can find the courage and faith as elegantly as her. A must read for everyone.
I laughed and cried my way through The Buoy Projects. I felt like I had known Wanda my entire life. I loved how the author did not hold back, and was completely open and honest about the experience of watching her mom live life to the fullest, while dying of cancer. May we all add more bucket lists to our lives full of love and free of judgement. Thank you, Wanda for your inspiration and bravery. Thank you, Lorna for sharing your mom's story. Highly recommend everyone add this to their summer reading list. I plan to read it for a second time this summer.
This is a page turner.... just couldn't put it down! If you liked Tuesdays with Morrie, you will love this! The author made me feel like I was part of Wanda's "epic" journey as she transitioned for the life hereafter. Her story reminds us of the importance of family, love, charity, and dignity, while not holding back on adventure with lots of belly aching laughter sprinkled in the mix. Truly a joyful, inspirational read!
Read this book in one night. Could not put it down! To know Wanda was to love her! This book was perfectly written. I will never forget one of my conversations with Wanda late one night. She told me to find & keep the humor in hard situations. Always keep it light & keep laughing. It will get you through the hard times, every time! To this day, I still do this & try to encourage all of my loved ones to do the same. Wanda taught us that life is short, live in the moment! Such a great read for anyone who never had the chance to know this beautiful person, anyone who is or has loved ones going through cancer treatments or for anybody that just needs to smile. You won't be disappointed & by the end of this book you will feel like you knew Wanda too :)
I never did meet Wanda, but had recieved a sympathy card from her when my Mother passed away 5 years ago, and she comforted me as if she had known me forever. Wandas daughters are a product of her raising and are all bright, strong, and beautiful women. This book written by Lorna just goes to show, and is so powerfully full of love, admiration, laughter, and strength. I feel fortunate to have known Wanda and her family. I laughed, I cried, and enjoyed The Buoy Projects so so very much. I have worked hand and hand with Hospice nurses, and end of life care. I believe Wanda was comforted, surrounded by love and family, and lathered in her favorite soothing lotions. I believe Wanda had the best end of life care and every hospice nurse should read this book! Great job, she heard every encouraging word and is so proud of her TEAM WANDA!!!
