When most people think about Special Operation Warriors they think of them as being both physically and mentally strong, physically fit, tactically sound, and even unbreakable. But even these warriors have a breaking point. One can only mentally endure so much violence, even if you are the one executing that violence before it effects your mental wellness. Tom openly shares his battle with PTS and how it effected his loved ones and friends around him. I applaud him for being courageous for doing so.
His saving grace was an angel by the name of Jen, who eventually became his rock and his bride. If it weren’t for her timely text message to Tom, I wouldn’t be writing this review. Jen has also become an angel and rock for other warriors suffering from PTS by listening to them share their nightmares, struggles with drugs, alcohol and how it’s destroying their marriages. Often shedding tears herself as she listened.
This book is filled with action as Tom shares his combat experiences in the Battle of Mogadishu and other combat experiences. But most importantly it shines the light on the battles that these warriors face on the home front after returning from deployments. A number of them end up committing suicide because they see no other way out and that should never be an option.
Thanks to Tom and Jen they started the nonprofit organization called the ALL SECURE FOUNDATION that helps these warriors get the help they need for healing.
Today is Veterans Day and this book would be a great gift for any veteran that you may know. I also encourage you to reach out to any veterans that you may know that is struggling with PTS, drugs, alcohol or any other issues that may push them to do the unthinkable.
Just two days ago I learned that one of my close friends took his own life in June. He struggled with drug addiction on and off for years. When I checked his FB page to see what he was up to and to see about getting together I saw that four people had posted RIP on his wall. I was immediately filled with guilt because I didn’t reach out sooner. Please don’t let that be you.
I leave you with this quote that is spot on for those struggling with PTS.
“Our brains are wired for connection, but trauma rewires them for protection. That’s why healthy relationships are difficult for wounded people.” ~RYAN NORTH
It’s an honor to call Tom and his rock, Jen, my friends.
I ordered Tom's book to support him and his foundation.
I read it in less than a day. While I have an interest in military stories, Tom reaches deeper by exposing the human side to our warriors. We all have a human side but part of what allows a human to fight also creates a shell that, as he describes, keeps in some dark poison. It feels good to see a healthy Mike and Jen and gives hope for those that are trying to live a good day by day and moment by moment.
The book provides some fascinating stories about Delta operations. The stories from Iraq are particularly compelling as few of us know the depth of that fight.
I'll contribute to the All Secure Foundation and root for success helping those with PTS.
I have been in touch with Tom since I first saw a post of his experiences as the ALL SECURE Foundation came to being a few years ago. I immediately found myself drawn to Tom's story from a personal experience withthedamaging effects of PTS. I also worked with Tom's unit while in Iraq, directly supporting the many operations they undertook, and saw the effects of constant operations on those operators. ALL SECURE is a page turner of history told from personal experience and sacrifices. We always hear stories of great heroics on battlefields in far off lands. We rarely hear about the effects of those battlefields on the warriors who fight them and even more rarely do we understand the effects on the people around them. ALL SECURE puts all of these perspectives in one source and identifies the potential for recovery and future success. Tom and Jen are on a truly admirable crusade that will have unparalleled effects on our warriors well beyond the physical battlefields. We owe it to these warriors and their families.
Full disclosure: I know Tom, and consider him both a friend and a mentor. With my biases disclosed, I'll give this book a rave review. All Secure is as real as it gets. If you're looking for gritty, searing action, it's got that in spades. Tom took part in many intense gun battles, some of which Americans have heard about, others of which will be new to almost every reader. Tom put his life on the line on a daily basis, and experienced things, including the loss of dear friends in battle, that few of us could comprehend. And the human toll of what Tom and his comrades in arms experienced, not just their heroism, is the heart of the book. Having done tremendous things on the battlefield, Tom once again performs a huge service by opening up about the PTSD he experienced as a result. As Tom demonstrates, even the bravest among us can be vulnerable, and even the bravest may need help processing their experiences. And there's no shame in that. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the realities of what we call on our fighting men and women to do. And it's a must read for those serving and their loved ones.
This book is a must-read for so many audiences...veterans, including those who are struggling and those who aren't; spouses; civilians seeking insight into warfare and those who conduct it; supporters of the military and veteran populations; and, naturally, those interested in special operations and military history.
All Secure is a memoir that includes fascinating accounts of action and experiences, but it's also a cautionary tale - albeit one presented in service of an inspirational and invaluable purpose.
The author, Tom Satterly, not only fought but *led* at the absolute tip of America's military spear, from the 1993 "Battle of the Black Sea" in Mogadishu to Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.
However, his personal road was anything but smooth and straightforward. Although he kept it bottled up throughout his military career, for reasons explained in the book, Tom was tormented by demons which not only led him to some very dark places, but which threatened his life and health in a way America's enemies never could.
Our military has endured nearly 20 years of continuous war since 9/11, and the toll that has taken on the brains, bodies, and psyches of our warfighters and their families is still not fully understood or appreciated, and the value of Tom's willingness to share that experience with the public cannot be overstated. While it's a huge step forward in his own healing process, the impact goes far beyond that -- a veteran of Tom's caliber and reputation, who comes from the Unit with which he served for so long, being willing to go public with his experience and his own vulnerability sends a powerful message to others not only that it is okay to need help and support, but that it is also okay to ask for it.
Tom's journey has also led him and his wife Jen to start the All Secure Foundation, through which they are doing truly amazing work by supporting the healing not just of warriors, but of warrior relationships, with an unfortunately rare but critical focus on spouses who are living not just with their partners' post-traumatic stress, but also with their own.
Tom and Jen are truly doing the Lord's work on behalf of the veteran community, and of society at large. This book provides an honest and revealing look at the experiences and struggles that led them to this point, and I highly recommend it for audiences of all stripes.
Powerful—Raw—Emotion. Absolutely amazing book—I am speechless. How can one write a review that could possibly do justice to express gratitude for the service Tom Satterly and other veterans have sacrificed for our freedom? This book gives an account of missions—so to imagine the full 18-20 years of deployments and missions...I can’t even fathom. The emotions and dedications experienced by our veterans and active military leave me humbled and blessed to be an American. Tom not only shares his lifelong accumulation of stories, but with raw emotion and passion that you can feel pouring from page to page. Choosing to share the battles of PTS with the desire to continue to help his fellow veterans with a foundation exemplifies Tom and Jen’s purpose to serve others—TRUE American hero’s! Thank you for your continued service—blessed and humbled by your words. May other know help is available through All Secure Fountain and Virago. THANK YOU!
I thank Tom and his Staff for writing this book. This is one of the greatest self-transcending books I've ever read. Wisdom is hard to obtain, of many wars and much combat at times. I would hope that all of us, no matter who you are, can seek out books like this one, All Secure, and learn the lessons taught so clearly and effectively, so that the bad in history doesn't repeat itself over and over again.
Once I began reading this book, (that I had pre-ordered by the way), I couldn't put it down. It was clearly written, with the logic in mind to captivate the reader's full attention, in interest and curiosity. There was never a dull moment. I found myself finishing it in about 3 days, the last day of which became a 10 hour, non-stop stretch...... I couldn't bear going to sleep for the night without finishing the book. Being said, that only gave me an hour of sleep before I had to get ready for work today. But it was worth it, this book has changed me and how I look at the world in many ways, all for the better. I always appreciate the time such amazing authors give, the sacrifices, the sleepless nights, it takes to compose a book, that shows such honesty and tactfulness.
I truly felt I was there with the author, seeing what he saw, feeling what he felt, crying with him, laughing with him !!!! But more importantly, I felt that, as an American myself, the author was speaking to my heart and my mind, knowing things that must be said, the things that I needed to hear, bringing peace to me and a fulfillment that only this book could stand in the way for.
I plead with you to read this book. Buy it, borrow it from a friend or family member. Take the time, it will be worth it. Thanks again for writing this book, Tom, we as Americans and citizens of the World appreciate your sacrifices and your courage to share your story, and those with you always who helped you too, along the way.
I bought this book for my husband who is a combat veteran and I ended up picking it up last night and couldn’t put it down!! I’m not big on military books or movies, but this one grabbed me and I ended up staying up way too late to read the first half of it. I brought it to work for my lunch hour as well! So much of what Tom and Jen went through and are going through is so similar to what my husband and I go through. Inspired! Thank you for your service!!
Tom displayed incredible courage not just in his missions with the Unit but also in dealing with his PTS. This book helped me understand his struggles and also helped me to understand my wife’s struggles as she lives with PTS from Domestic Violence. Such a great story and a great new mission he’s on to save the lives of those coming back from war. Our special operators are human beings and they are NOT sociopaths. They are compassionate, loving Americans who sacrificed for our freedoms. I thank Tom for his service in the military and his continued service to those still struggling with the horrors of war.
