From local Delaware county, Pa. born servant; to esteemed world traveler; a great account of a humble man that never stops taking action to help others. Very easy to read. His accomplishments contrast his down to earth, Regular guy personality.
What a wonderfully entertaining and informative book! Jersey Lawman is full of stories about a law enforcement officer trying to do his best to be fair in a very difficult job in an increasingly difficult world. Plousis and Ingram give a great description of real life issues in a sincere way interspersed with enough humor to make this an enjoyable read. Not to mention that the proceeds from the book will benefit a great cause.
As a writer, I recently purchased Jersey Lawman to research a project I am working on relating to law enforcement. What began as "reading for my work" quickly became a surprising and engaging experience.
A wonderfully written memoir which chronicles a 4-decades-long law enforcement career and the full spectrum of duties that come with it -- From going face to face with a raccoon in an attic as a patrolman to being appointed as a US Marshall and being recognized for excellence in law enforcement by several Presidents of the United States.
Although incorporating background and explanation on laws and procedures followed in law enforcement, Jersey Lawman never once loses a beat. Each story reads like an episode of the best written police television dramas. Reading Jersey Lawman is like binge-watching a great police series while on the edge of your seat. I just couldn't get enough of it! The book truly has it all: Colorful characters, like the Pinelands native who cooked pots of stew from road kill to the interception of an Asian freighter with a human cargo of illegal immigrants -- not to mention Sheriff Plousis' hair-raising, face-to-face encounter with organized crime's most notorious villain. Each story is an eye-opening page-turner which gives the reader a true taste of a "life on the right side of crime," as the book's subtitle tells us.
What I found so personally engaging is that like the best written dramas, Plousis shares his very personal insights on each of his real-life stories. It is touching and rather moving to experience the human element involved with each case he investigated or call he responded to. In the current social climate of police being unfairly vilified, it was refreshing and promising to read about the compassion and empathy that he and so many other law enforcement officers experience while serving others.
I have given this book as a gift to a police officer who found it equally as fascinating.
Whatever your background, career or interests, whether law enforcement or not, this book is guaranteed to pull you in and not let you go. I recommend it highly! Excellent book!
Jim Plousis, is a legend in South Jersey. He started out as a "beat cop" in Ocean City, New Jersey and I'm honored to personally know Jim. His law-enforcement career is one of dedication and accomplishment. He successfully ran for sheriff of Cape May county and it was uphill from there. After a distinguished career in local and national law-enforcement he was appointed chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. Jim can serve as a role-model to anyone wishing to enter law-enforcement.
This big book is easy and fun to read by virtue of being well-organized into many short chapters. All the chapters are focused stories and will have special significance to long-time residents of New Jersey; buy there's plenty for everyone in this variety pack of true-life experiences, from humor to human interest, to public protection. One of my favorites towards the end has the author and friends driving through the backroads of Haiti hand-distributing 1000 soccer balls to the local kids.
Mr. Plousis' honest and at times humorous account of his life in law enforcement, from patrolman to Sheriff, is a pleasure to read. It is clear that his grounded account of his vast array of experiences and creativity contributed to his successful and inspirational career in law enforcement. It shows that a successful career in law enforcement is not measured by simply 'catching and detaining the bad guy', but by making your community a better place thru inspirational acts that everyone will want to emulate in their own way.
Jim is our hero. A local cop who was elected County Sheriff with emphasis on making communication better...with his strong commitment to service he was subsequently appointed US Marshal of NJ and then to NJ's chair of the Parole Board. Presently he serves as the head of the Casino Control Commission. I don't believe there is a man or woman who can read this book without a strong acceptance of a great man's compassion, humor and dedication to service in his community. I highly recommend this book to all. Now relax and read this book...from start to finish you will recognize the role these unsung heroes play in your life. All proceeds benefit the US Marshal's Survivors Benefit Fund
All those who have worked in law enforcement, or who are from law enforcement families, will appreciate the recollections of the timeless cop. An excellent read - with just enough humor and compassion to make me recommend Jersey Lawman to all my family and friends!
Excellently written and very informative. I’ve been friends with Jim Plousis for 25+ years. I have known him as a policeman in Ocean City, as a Sheriff of Cape May County, as a U.S. Marshall, as Chairman of the State Parole Board and as Chairman of the Casino Control Commission. In all of his endeavors he is recognized by many for his hard work, loyalty, dedication and high degree of intelligence. It was very interesting and a pleasure to read this book making me aware of the many dedicated, wonderful and charitable functions he has performed through his life. I highly recommend this book, not only to those who know Jim, but to the many who will recognize the strong sensitivity needed to be a career law enforcement official.
I have known Jim Plousis since we were little boys in Lansdowne PA. Our Moms were very close and over the years we kept track of each other through them as we wandered through our respective law enforcement careers. In the last 25 years we have done a better job keeping track of each other and have had many great conversations. Reading this book felt like another conversation with Jim; easy, humorous and genuine. It is a tale of a humble guy who joined law enforcement to make a difference and delivered in every sense of the word. I predict this book will need an addendum because I think he has more to give. It should not be lost on anyone that all of the proceeds from this book go to the U. S. Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund.......did I mention humble.
