Enemy's Everywhere---The Nightmare Returns. UGH!
January 22, 2020
Hang on, once you start reading because this fast, intense read is a tough, unending ride! Wow! Kept me holding my breath again and again.
Rachel Caine has mastered the art of first-person storytelling, using the alternating chapter perspectives of four family members, all struggling to help each other and just survive. Each chapter reveals the immediate crisis through the eyes of one person caught up in relentless threats from an ever growing number of attackers. Few can be trusted.
The story focuses around Gwen Proctor, her children Lanny and Connor, and live-in boyfriend Sam, all back from Books 1-3. The story continues, but this thriller could easily be read as a standalone book. However, I'm glad I've read the series---in order.
The suspenseful plotline will have you both guessing and caught by surprise in every chapter with the neverending ending psychology trauma the characters experience right from the start.
Adding to my enjoyment of this novel was the well-done Audible narration with different voices for each of the four characters and their individual chapter accounts.
I was NOT disappointed with this great escape read as a worthwhile investment in entertainment and distraction.
As with the other three previous books, you might find some subjects inappropriate for younger audiences, although violence, adult themes, and language kept within "commonly acceptable" limits for most psychological thrillers. Probably not for the faint of heart.
