As I read, I kept thinking about how smooth the writing was. The way the author explains the dystopia world, the fear, dread, and unfairness. It was so … smooth. Just seemed different to me. I really enjoyed it. The world we find ourselves in is so intriguing. I loved discovering the many layers of this weird, depressing world through Nova’s eyes, through her fears that she is destined to be nothing more than monster food. I felt the trepidation. Her determination filled me. What great storytelling!
Selling it as “HARRY POTTER MEETS THE HUNGER GAMES” is disingenuous to Harry, Katnis, and Nova. Not the same situation. Not the same magic. Not pitted against each other. Nova and her classmates are dumped in the middle of a forest full of extreme predators like dragons and swarms of carnivorous ants, and expected to survive … dumped in the deep end to learn to swim. Don’t go into this comparing it to either of those two other series. This one might not meet their grandeur, but it holds its own in its own way.
Emotional tension and suspense keeps the plot flowing quickly. I ended up reading Shadow Trials in one sitting. Don’t remember that ever happening. It’s great story.
Magic is in all of us. Loyalty is #1. When staring down death you should cling to love. These 3 books were just awesome. A strong female character learns so many lessons and then saves us all. If you are a fan of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Divergent, then please read these books. You will not be disappointed!
