An Apt Metaphor For What We All Strive For
Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2020
The author uses the metaphor of living on "cloud nine" as a metaphor for the aspiration that we all strive for--balance, flow, contentment. Whatever you call it, there is a constant tension in life that pulls us toward and (at the same time) away from that state of being.
In Cloud Nine, the author uses fictional vignettes to guide the reader through his own experience with "cloud nine" living. The fictional Jerry faces the obstacles that keep us from achieving it.
While well-conceived, the structure was a bit confusing with some flashbacks and flash-forwards throughout Jerry's life. In that way, the allegory is a bit contrived in service of the principles of "cloud nine" living. The common strength of the book was the tie of the metaphor of Cloud Nine.
That said, the fundamentals of the idea are sound: Take time for play. Invest in what fulfills you. Live with passion and purpose. A solid self-help guide.
