friendship, love and triumph!
“This Magnificent Dappled Sea” is a book worthy of discussion and offers many “hot topics” - infidelity, serious illness, deformity, gender inequality, religious harmony, right to life/choice, politics, etc. A book club could go on for days.
Author, David Biro, is a well educated doctor. Based on his other published works, I’m assuming he’s been a patient for some considerable time/reason that was rather painful. These combined experiences of doctor and patient, give his writing an element of veracity that’s patient sensitive while not jeopardizing the medical aspects.
The story is organized by beginning with a brief intro from present day (2017) and then following with 7 clearly defined parts that are either characters or major events from the story. It closes by returning to the 2017 time period. Devoting adequate time to develop the characters in part 1, THE BOY, and Part 2, THE RABBI, were key to the success of this book.
Biro’s prose is nicely done. It’s descriptive without being flowery when dealing with landscapes, clothing, and it’s detailed without being gruesome when dealing with medical or violent scenarios. There’s some rough language, but it’s used properly for the characters, not gratuitously.
“This Magnificent Dappled Sea” shows people reaching out beyond themselves, for the benefit of others, sometimes at the risk of themselves, just because it’s the right thing to do; no bill included📚
