The BOW STREET RUNNERS is an earlier series by the wonderful Lisa Kleypas that just didn't live up to my high expectations. The first two books were barely okay and the third I enjoyed, but there wasn't one in the trilogy that I loved. Most of this has to do with the characters in the first two stories though, who I could barely tolerate much less like. In all honesty I probably won't read any of them again, although the last book may be an exception and is the only one I'd recommend out of the entire trio.
Book 1 - SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME (Originally Published in 1999) 3 STARS
She couldn't remember who she was and he was the only man she could trust... Or could she?
Neither Grant nor Vivien were especially likable individuals. The mystery was okay but a little predictable too. It's hard to love a story though when you basically have no respect for the main characters, which was more or less my issue here.
Book 2 - LADY SOPHIA'S LOVER (Originally Published in 2002) 3 STARS
Lady Sophia is looking for a lover and only one man will do. But can she seduce the most marriageable man in London?
Giving this story even three stars is probably a little generous to tell you the truth. I do so only because of Sir Ross whom I loved. Sophia on the other hand I couldn't stand and I don't know what our hero saw in her. She pretty much ruined it for me and Ross deserved so much better!
Book 3 - WORTH ANY PRICE (Originally Published in 2003) 4 STARS
A runaway bride and the Bow Street Runner hired to find her. What price will they pay when he marries her instead?
I was fascinated with Nick and couldn't wait to read his story. And while he did fall a little short of my ideal, I still liked both him and Charlotte. Their romance was pretty steamy and flowed along smoothly too. It's a little dark but also a very compelling tale.
Note: There is also a novella connected to this series that ties into the "Gamblers" series as well, for those who don't already know:
AGAINST THE ODDS (Lydia Craven & Dr. Jake Linley) 4 STARS
This novella was originally published in the "Where's My Hero?" anthology in 2003... Lydia is Derek Craven's daughter (Dreaming of You) and Jake makes his first appearance in "Someone to Watch Over Me"
