I stopped reading Koontz' work after the Odd Thomas series because I was so disappointed in the last few books (I didn't bother with the last one). But I did return to read the Jane Hawk series, which was very good and well-worth the time I spent with it.
I'd hoped that the Nameless series would deliver the same sort of punch. It did not.
Authorial intrusion (author intruding on the plotline to speak directly to the reader about something that may or may not have anything to do with the story) is annoying and distracts from the dream state good fiction should create. This is what ruined the Odd Thomas series for me. But I could roll with it if he didn’t go on and on for pages at a time. And it might not have been nearly as noticeable if these weren’t short books.
To boot, the writing was not up to the same standards as Jane Hawk or even the early Odd Thomas books. And I only finished it because a) I had access to it via Kindle Unlimited and didn't have to pay for it and b) because I was hooked by the concept, and I wanted to know how it would all end.
Well. So much for that. I can roll with endings like this one if the rest of the work is solid and the writing makes it worth it. But this work wasn't solid enough to deliver the sort of gut-punch this supposed to offer. All in all, I feel like I wasted my time.
