PreS-Gr 1—Poor Emily Ann. It's Thanksgiving, and she is feeling decidedly unthankful. Her older brother and sister ignore her, and her parents and grandparents are busy with meal preparations. Although her ever-present dog offers sympathetic companionship, Emily Ann, is feeling sad and alone and decides to hide the roast turkey. Fortunately, before she has time to carry out her naughty plan, her mother ushers her into an empty dining room, where Emily Ann is consoled by the sight of her prize-winning place mats and a gaggle of relatives who suddenly appear. Told in rhyme that occasionally feels as forced as the trite message, Thanksgiving for Emily Ann is a missed opportunity to recognize a child's honest experience of the holiday. About the Author

Teresa Johnston is an author of books for children, including MY TOOTH IS LOOSE, DR. MOOSE. She lives in Ohio with her husband and two children, Ben and Lily.
Illustrator Vanessa Brantley Newton trained at the Fashion School of Technology and the School of Visual Arts. She has illustrated many books for children, including Mister and Lady Day, One Love, and Let Freedom Sing. She and her husband live in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Vanessa celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures through her work, and hopes to inspire young readers to find their own voices. She first learned to express herself as a little girl through song. Growing up in a musical family, Vanessa’s parents taught her how to sing to help overcome her stuttering. Each night the family would gather to make music together, with her mom on piano, her dad on guitar, and Vanessa and her sister, Coy, singing the blues, gospel, spirituals, and jazz. Now whenever she illustrates, music fills the air and finds its way into her art. The children she draws can be seen dancing, wiggling, and moving freely across the page in an expression of happiness. Music is a constant celebration, no matter the occasion, and Vanessa hopes her illustrations bring joy to others, with the same magic of a beautiful melody.

It's hard to find good Thanksgiving that aren't about the (historically inaccurate) "First Thanksgiving" so I was so excited when I came across this one and ordered it right away. Emily Ann is frustrated about all the disruptions going on during the dinner prep, plus the normal annoyances of siblings. She decides to get into some mischief to tame her boredom, but when her mom gives her an encouragement, she starts to notice all the wonderful things going in. Most importantly is that all her family is together to celebrate the day and that's the best thing to be thankful for.
