For the remainder of the volume both the artwork and the stories are a frustrating mix of the good and the mundane. It’s hard not to feel sorry for Ennis. It was a very big pair of shoes to fill replacing John Wagner and I think by his own admission he felt a little overawed. What I can say is despit the odd misfire his heart is very much in the right place, and the decision to bring back some older characters (Dekker and Perrier although the cynical would say it’s to add shock value) works well. Again ‘Judgement Day’ was released as a stand-alone volume under Titan so if you have that book you are paying a lot here for stories that are sometimes not the best. Of the remaining stories, I certainly enjoyed ‘Texas City Sting’ which was well illustrated and entertaining as Dredd uses the Third Mega City’s laws to great effect to pick up escaped perps. ‘the Marshal’ also sets up a later story in a later volume which made fans wistful for the Ennis era. Of the other stories, ‘Babes in Arms’ is superficially entertaining but on reflection quite average and nothing else really stands out.
So to the story which comprises 50% of the volume - ‘Judgement Day’. It’s like much of Ennis a mixed bag. Part of the problem is it feels in many ways a retread of ‘The Apocalypse war’ only less thought out. Killing off vast swathes of the planet seems all too final, and very like a Marvel/ DC experiment. That said, the end prog as well as most of the scenes featuring Johnny Alpha are worth reading. It is however, not surprising that this is not considered the best mega epic. However, it’s fitting that perhaps it should sit here, in a volume that while still entertaining is ‘the sum of its parts’ - still think the effort warrant four stars and would recommend to any fan.

The other stories in this volume are not up to the standard of the earlier volumes but are still entertaining none the less.
2000 AD and The Megazine were going through a bit of a slump during this period and it shows.
However, the worst of Dredd is still better than most of the US comic output during this time.
