Jack Reacher: One Shot: A Novel Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: You got the wrong guy. Then he says: Get Reacher for me.
And sure enough, ex—military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. He knows this shooter–a trained military sniper who never should have missed a shot. Reacher is certain something is not right–and soon the slam-dunk case explodes.
Now Reacher is teamed with a beautiful young defense lawyer, moving closer to the unseen enemy who is pulling the strings. Reacher knows that no two opponents are created equal. This one has come to the heartland from his own kind of hell. And Reacher knows that the only way to take him down is to match his ruthlessness and cunning–and then beat him shot for shot.

There's a mass shooting in an Indiana municipal plaza leaving five dead (a number that seems almost quaint in comparison to similar tragedies we see today), seemingly random victims of a madman. The police quickly find a suspect who has left an evidence trail that a blind man could follow. James Barr is a former Army sniper who is quickly apprehended, he isn't talking but the only thing he's said is "Get Jack Reacher". JR soon finds himself in the midwest embroiled in assisting Barr's lawyer who happens to be the daughter of the city DA. Reacher wonders why Barr asked for him, they're not friends and in fact Reacher knows some of Barr's dark past making him a questionable ally for the defense. Naturally things are not as they appear (or it would be a short story) and once JR starts digging he uncovers a complex conspiracy and facing ruthless enemies who think nothing of leaving bodies in their wake.
I enjoyed "One Shot" and happily in this novel Child avoids making any of his usual gaffs in talking about firearms or military issues which was nice for a change. I've already started "The Hard Way" and it's very good.
The 1-star is for the tiny writing, so I hope someone takes notice and does something about it.
PS, I won't be buying any more paperback Jack Reacher novels for this reason alone, but I will probably download the ebooks. But I have 4 recently purchased (jack reacher) paperbacks that I have yet to read. Maybe I can return them to amazon and get the ebooks instead.

GET JACK REACHER FOR ME.
Upon hearing this Jack Reacher knows he cannot ignore it, and so he heads for James Barr's location, but not to help him, to provide evidence AGAINST him, for as Reacher knows, James Barr has done this before.
But when Reacher gets to his destination he realises that although the evidence against James Barr is overwhelming, there are still something's that don't add up.
And so, with the help of Barr's attorney, a former police officer turned private investigator and Barr's sister Reacher investigates.
If like me you've seen the film before reading the book, then don't expect many things to be the same, but don't let that deter you from reading the book, the storyline is the same. To me it's a great film and a great book, worth 5🌟.
The story without giving too much away. A lone sniper kills five people during rush hour. The police manage to solve the case extremely quickly, the captured man just has one request he wants Jack Reacher. They have not met for 14 year, and given the circumstances of their last meeting Jack Reacher should be the last person James Barr should want anywhere around. The first problem with that is you don't find Jack Reacher unless he wants to be found. Luckily or unluckily he has unfinished business with Barr. What follows is a thrilling investigation in to a case that as far as the police are concerned is closed. Reacher's style of investigating is more nose to the grindstone, interviews/interrogations, and deduction rather than computer analysis, which I have to say I prefer. There is not as much action in this book as I expected maybe that will change in the movie version.
Really good book making use of technology and good old detective skill. By the end of the book I wanted it to be longer. I will definitely read another Lee Child's book, just got to decide which one.
