Another success! Faith Hunter has begun The Soulwood Series with her usual flair for presenting very real characters with personal issues that they continue to discover and internalize, transforming themselves and discovering more about themselves throughout the storyl. I dearly love Nell, the heroine, and I enjoyed her interaction with PsyLED and Ricky-Bo LaFleur crossing over from Hunter's Jane Yellowrock Skinwalker series. Rick is still the character of whom I wasn't very fond, but even he appears to have grown under Nell's influence and straightforward outspokenness. We revisted a cultish church in which Nell was raised, and the ending of the story ... reunion ... left me thinking, "What, Faith???!!! It ends HERE????" That thought and the feelings accompanying it are an indication that I MUST reread the novel immediately to discover what subtleties I missed (with every one of her Skinwalker and Rogue Mage series, I always discover subtle details that enhance the story when I read it a second time).

And, the second book in the series? WOW!!! I was so excited to immerse myself in Nell's world again. I've read this second book in record time. I'm about to read it again to catch all the tiny bits and pieces I missed the first read. It's an amazing complex tale with several story lines at once, like all of Faith Hunter's books, and each is easy to follow yet intriguing and fascinating as a whole. Rick LaFleur has a powerful change in his life, and true to his nature of having difficulty with gratitude, we're left wondering. Relationships of Nell's PsyLED team are empowered, and Nell's experiences with her own magic and the Earth grow and mature. I'm already all ready for the third on the Soulwood series. Faith, you ROCK!!!

I received a digital ARC of this novel, Blood of the Earth, courtesy of NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group in exchange for a honest review. Nell was the exact opposite of Jane so it was strange at first reading her voice, but I started to like Nell. Some of her backstory sort of dragged for me but it was necessary for us to understand her a lot more. Rick wasn't so bad in this but Paka, there's something weird about her. I don't like her. The other people in this book was awesome and I cannot wait to read the sequel to learn more about them. I want to learn about their life, not just the things they said, all of them look like they have baggage. The book was slow at times but when it picked up it picked. The ending made me mad because I had so many questions, and I hope the sequel answers some of the questions I had while reading this book. If you are a reader of the Jane Yellowrock you would love this and if you aren't that's OK this book can be read as a standalone book of sorts. Oh and more thing there's a reason this book is called Soulwood, it's the name of the forest around Nell's house. I am not going to say more about the forest but it is creepy as heck. This book deserves three stars just because it's a great start to what could be an amazing series. I cannot wait to read Curse of the Land because the summary of that book sounds even better than the first one.

WOW, I LOVED THIS STORY…
“This excellent new series, Blood of the Earth, is part of the Jane Yellowrock world. When Jane came into Nell Ingram’s forest in the short story, Off the Grid, Nell was alone in the world, exiled by both choice and fear from the cult she was raised in, (which ironically her property is next to) defending herself with the magic she draws from her deep connection to the forest that surrounds her. . Nell has a harmony with nature that ties her to her land that widens as the story progresses.”
This story is deep and more complex than I expected, it was slow at first, with an all new cast of characters, but as all the details were finished, the author takes you on a “roller coaster” ride to the very exciting conclusion.

Soulwood is a spinoff from the Jane Yellowrock universe. It's an amazing series! Faith Hunter is an incredibly talented author, who creates encaptivating worlds in her books! These characters are so enthralling, they suck you right in! I highly recommend checking this series out!

Faith Hunter, urban fantasy writer, was born in Louisiana and raised all over the south. Hunter fell in love with reading in fifth grade, and best loved SciFi, fantasy, and gothic mystery. She decided to become a writer in high school, when a teacher told her she had talent.
